I was a Counsellor with Service Canada when Billy came in to request sponsorship to Commercial Safety College, for the Truck driving course. I liked him right away and figured he would make a good driver. I had driven trucks for many seasons while in College, so, I knew what to look for. After retirement I returned to driving and still do.
I purchased a dump truck while Billy was in the course. When he graduated at or near the top of his class, I hired him to drive my truck. After 3 days he asked for a day off. I was concerned and said to him " you've only been here 3 days and you want a day off already ". He then told me that it was for his Mothers funeral. I told him to take whatever time he needed. His job was secure ! Billy turned out to be very dependable , and a friend. You could set your watch by his arrival in the morning !
Second year , there didnt look like much truck work, when out of the blue, A new paving company, East River Paving asked if I would lease them my truck, as they couldnt afford to purchase their own. I said that I would, provided they hired Billy to drive it, otherwise No, I also added 50 cents per hour to his pay.
Billy was just as dependable for them as he was for me. When the Company eventually purchased their own truck, they kept Billy. I sold mine, and since there wasnt any paving during the winter, I arranged to use their truck to haul salt, with Billy driving it. He stayed with that Company for many years.
I was shocked to see his obituary. I only saw Billy on occasion, but, we were always glad to see each other. He appreciated his first job as a driver. And the respect and appreciation was mutual, and reciprocated.
Condolences to his family, friends, and to all who loved him. Rest in Peace Billy !

First memory of my friend Bill was while training for the Johnny Miles half marathon back in 2014, just started running and got tired running up the hill by his house! Bill was out in his garden which was beautiful so I stopped to chat, catch my breath, take in the beauty of his garden. Before you knew it that stop led to a friendship over the years in his garden, sipping tea, talking about everything and nothing in particular, and even on a hot day enjoyed a cold one together. I think I treated Bill to his first Starbucks too! We also would help a fellow in need that lived outside and would go by Bill's place. Bill was one of the most genuine, kind people I have ever met and he had a terrific sense of humor. I will miss Bill and I hope he is now in the garden of his dreams! Rest in peace friend and until we meet again. With love - Beth
