Amit, Hilary R., May 22, 1958 – November 27,2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hilary Romesh Ambuldeniya Amit, age 66 after a three-year battle with cancer. Born May 22, 1958, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Harris Royston & Amybelle Patricia (Ambuldeniya) Amit. He was predeceased by sister Iromi and his parents.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate Linda Boudreau, son Harrison Rene Amit, (Muna) Toronto, and daughter Dominique Amit, Stellarton, sister Minoli, (John Hamilton) Antigonish, brother-in-law Peter Tufts, (the late Iromi) Halifax, and sister Udeni, (Andrew Roger) Halifax, brothers-in-law Denis Boudreau and Pierre Boudreau, Bathurst. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews, two grand-nieces and a grand-nephew, and by several cousins and their families around the world.
Hilary was a devoted husband, loving father, and Uncle to his cherished nephews and nieces. He held his friends close to his heart and enjoyed every minute of laughter in their company.
Although Hilary left Sri Lanka in 1971, he was proud of his Sri Lankan birth and heritage. Hilary arrived in Antigonish in August 1971 with his three sisters and parents. He settled into life in Antigonish, with music lessons, church choirs, skating lessons and trips to the ski hill. Hilary was a proud graduate of the Antigonish Regional High School and St. Francis Xavier University where he formed many long-lasting friendships.
After a brief stint in Togo as a Cuso volunteer, Hilary next moved to Halifax to work for Canada World Youth, through which he met Linda. The couple eventually settled in Pictou County.
Hilary gave generously of his time and talent serving as a volunteer in his community on the Boards of Directors for Summer Street Industries, Aberdeen Health Foundation, and the Human Resources Council for the Non-Profit Sector. He enjoyed his career in community development and social work administration - serving as Executive Director of Highland Community Residential Services for 25 years. His years of community service were recognized with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012.
Hilary’s family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to all of his health-care providers for their care and support over the last three years and in particular to the staff of the Palliative Care unit at the Aberdeen Hospital who cared for him during his final weeks.
