Obituary of Norman Grant Munroe
Please share a memory of Norman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Norman Grant Munroe age 71, of New Glasgow passed away on November 21, 2024 at the QE II Halifax Infirmary. Born August 26, 1953 in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the eldest son of the late Dr. Roy and Sylvia (MacDonald) Munroe.
In his youth Norman spent time in Guyana with his cadet peers. He was an adherent of First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton and a longtime member of the Airforce Association of Canada.
Norman obtained a degree in computer science from Acadia University in 1976. For many years he held a commercial pilot license and combined with his love of photography and flying allowing him to photograph the area of Northern Nova Scotia. His interest in all things aeronautical began as a proud nephew of his uncle Millan who flew a Lancaster in WWII. The History channel gave him access to enjoy repeated viewing of any and all aerial conflicts.
Both on land and in the air, his many photos were included either in the yearly calendars or his coffee table books. The book on Pictou County Churches have assumed some historical value as many are no longer places of worship or are no longer existing physical structures.
His interests were many and varied, an avid reader, the reading choices tended to be on military, political or biographical themes. Trivia, rapid recollection of dates or events was remarkable. This no doubt was helpful in the challenging sudoku and crossword puzzles done weekly. His constant companion was music of all genres. All know the Beatles were his favorite band, he could recall all their albums and their content.
Having travelled to many countries, Scotland captured his heart. Having family in the highlands, he loved the people, the countryside and his kin. That led to researching his family tree and heritage and how it led to and impacted our Pictou County traditions.
The last number of years led to an interest in woodworking projects, both large and small having taken a course in woodworking at NSCC. Many toddlers have been gifted with his little chairs or toy boxes. A paper mâché the “Nutcracker” was constructed on a grand scale purely for the enjoyment of the children, less so for his wife. His wit was sharp coupled with a keen sense of humor, called upon in the past to play Santa, his physique led to bring the perfect model.
Recently he ventured into the kitchen domain and tackled challenging recipes involving extensive prep. No assistance was expected or requested, either here or at the barbeque where he excelled.
It can’t be overstated his love and embrace of the children in his life. It is rare to find a photo without a child in tow. He gave abundantly with patience and a total investment in their activities and interests. The many stories shared in recent days are a testament to his devotion. To all, he gave without reserve, patient beyond measure and generous to a fault. In that generous spirit, his kidneys, lungs and corneas have been a priceless gift to others.
He gave generously to many charities as needs arose. We would encourage you to continue his generosity in making a donation to a charity close to your heart.
Norm is survived by his wife Lynda, brothers Kevin, Ernest and Michael; sister Shelley (Mike) Keddy; Norman had a great love for his numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews
He was predeceased by a sister-in-law Chella.
