Donald MacDonald,
My heart goes out to Novena and family for your loss. I worked with Doug for years and he was truly a special person. He worked hard and long to support his family. He had a special bond with Melanie, and was a proud dad, he always had a twinkle in his eye when telling stories about her especially during her school years. He was proud of being from Cape Breton and always joked about breaking away from the mainland. He was a gentleman both on and off the ice, and you always had to keep an eye on him, because as quite and soft spoken as he was he could come out of nowhere and score. The Leafs was certainly his team and always proud to wear their team colors. I never drove by the family home without admiring the beautifully trimmed bushes, it was like something out of a magazine, and I am sure Novena it was a team effort.
It was an honor to have known Doug.

So sorry to hear about Dougie’s passing. I have so many wonderful memories growing up on Avalon Drive… many included our many family get togethers there & in New Waterford. Lots of family, laughs, and always a ton of food! Dougie was always kind & liked by everyone. He adored his family & went out of his way to help others. He helped us with his kindness & support when my dad passed away. And I’m still a Michelin tire gal because of Dougie. I wish I could turn back the clock to when we were all together… laughing & enjoying great family times. I’m grateful for the memories and thinking of all you during this really sad loss. Condolences & love to Innes, Melanie, and the entire family & all the great relatives & friends that were lucky enough to know such a wonderful man.

Although it has been a long time since we seen each other, I have very fond memories of when we were inseparable from 12-14 years old. We would go with Dougie's grandfather Squeeky to the horse races in Sydney 2-3 times a week. We played cribbage every day for almost 3 years in my coal barn, by candlelight. Right after supper until the 8.30 Whistle. We did actually get 4, 28 hands between us during those 3 years but not a perfect 29..It's a wonder we never got silicone from. the coal dust. I will remember these days with fondness, even though they are old, but they are always fresh in my mind. Rest in Peace Buddy.

So sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. I have many great memories and laughs from working with him at Michelin Tire for 30+ years. Many a “conversation” was had about his Toronto Maples and my Boston Bruins. Lots of battles and laughs took place playing cards in the break room. He was a great work buddy. Sending our sincere condolences to you Novena and family. Rest in Peace buddy.
