My aunt Grace Christine Fraser Kowalski & uncle Bernie Kowalski, with their daughter, Carolyn, (Kowakski) Turner & I, as a little girl, (I would stay with my cousin Carolyn a few weeks each summer)we would visit the family in the farmhouse, (I believe it was where Calvin lived) (I remember his red hair)but I wasn't quite sure who they were until later on... I also went on a few trips to Hlfx ( I was taking a course at the Halifax Infirmary at the time, 1970 & 71) with Calvin & his wife Mary Stewart Fraser, she was my teacher in grade 11 @ EPRH, Sutherland's River. I always loved her Stewart
Tartan skirt....as I am Scottish too, I love the Scottish tartans.
(my Mother, Doris I. MacInnis Fraser's, grandma was a Stewart from greenvale) their names were Charles Robert & Christy Bell Stewart.
I believe my grandmother, on my Fathers side, Henry K. Fraser, Elisabeth (Libby) Mae Sutherland Fraser, who was a teacher & married John Hugh Fraser from MacPherson's Mills, as a little girl, Libby, fs she lived in a big house just before you turn onto Calvin's roadway, in the big field beside a tree line, on the right side of road...all buildings
Fell down when I was very young.... Grama Libby had a grandmother the same name as hers, Elisabeth, Mrs J.J. Sutherland ( her maiden name, I don't know ?) & her son who had same name as his Father was Libby's Father.
Her Parents were in that house, John James Sutherland, his wife,
Jessie Morrison Sutherland, grama's sister Hattie Anne Sutherland Smith, who taught school in Laggan, Barnies River & their younger brother George, who died as a young man...I know this is a lot of info, but I know we are related to Calvin, but I can't find the connection....just now? Maybe someone could help!!
Calvin was always welcoming & never hesitated on taking me to my boarding house on Cherry St. When I hitched a ride with them instead of the Bus!
To me he was an outdoors guy who loved to work with nature, etc.. I was only young, (18 yrs) & I haven't seen him all this time, but I still remember him!! He will forever remain as fond memories in all our loving hearts!!
Be happy & free, Calvin, in the great beautiful Heavenly Forest, where our God resides & He's holding you in his ever loving embrace...........Amen!
Sincerely,
Lily ( Linda M.) Fraser

Robert and Sarah Brown posted a condolence

Sarah and I had only met Calvin more than forty years after being towed out of the forested area on the Kerrowgare Road between Sunny Brae and the Garden of Eden by Andrew, behind their Allis-Chalmers tractor on Ground Hog Day in 1959, when we were headed to Sydney on our way to be married four days later.
Calvin had not been at home on that cold day, but when we came back to the Garden of Eden to try and locate Andrew and his family to thank them in person on a lovely August day for their rescue of our bacon that wintry February afternoon forty years before, we couldn’t find Andrew, who was away up the mountain somewhere, working on his trees. However, we spotted a couple of young men, working on their blueberry-picking machine near the Fraser family house, and asked them if they knew where he might be, so we could thank him in person. Much to our surprise, one of them was John Andrew, who told us that we wouldn’t likely find his uncle that day, but that his dad was picking blueberries in a field just above the Sherbrooke Road, and that he would love to see us, even though we had never met before.
After driving back to the Sherbrooke Road location where his dad and others were picking berries halfway up the hill and parking, Sarah and I climbed the hill and found the pickers busily filling their containers. When the first picker we asked about Calvin shouted to him, he came quickly down the field to meet us and expressed his joy at finally being able to meet us in person, as our rescue had long been a topic of interest in his family and also had recently been featured in an article in the local paper. He also told us that Sarah’s letter of thanks to his parents, although being poorly addressed, had not only reached his parents, but had a place of honour on a wall in their home.
He invited us to come home with him for a cup of tea and to meet Mary, and a quick bond of friendship was forged between the four of us. Every summer when Sarah and I travelled to Cape Breton to visit her folks, a trip to visit Calvin and Mary was a necessary stop to renew our contact and exchange news. He even insisted on our staying at their cottage on the Lake one year when we were travelling to Cape Breton with our eldest daughter; a kindness that we will always treasure in our hearts!
Calvin was also a great help to me when I was trying to solve the mystery of who the parents of Sarah’s mother may have been, as her mother had no knowledge of who they might have been, having been torn from her own mother’s arms by an over-zealous manager of the Middlemore Home in Bedford in 1906. Calvin put me in touch with a local historian and fellow genealogist who was able to introduce me to a contact in our Ottawa area, who turned out to be a cousin of Sarah’s on her mother’s father’s side of the family. That contact proved to also be a family historian on her side of the family, and we eventually met in person, became friends, and exchanged genealogical notes that were very helpful in resolving that part of the problem.
Calvin and I also exchanged notes and political cartoons via the internet on many occasions. His greeting cards each Christmas and his telephone calls around the beginning of the year were always a wonderful way to exchange news and views each year. I will greatly miss them and especially, Calvin.
When I hadn’t heard from Calvin this past Christmas, I wondered if something had happened to him, but as Sarah and I had recently moved into a lovely retirement home after selling our previous home and drastically downsizing in a short period of time, I regretfully had not followed up on my concern until today. I was greatly saddened to find our friend, Calvin’s obituary online, and want to express our deep and heartfelt condolences, prayers, and love to Mary, John Andrew and Susie at their great loss of their loving and caring husband and father. We will miss him greatly, as well.

Calvin was very kind and supportive to me when I was a young surveyor working with him at the Department of Transportation over 30 years ago. Since then, we would have a nice chat whenever we saw each other. There would always be a few laughs in each conversation. He was highly respected, well loved, and will be dearly missed.
Deepest sympathies to the family.

Our sincere sympathy to Mary, John Andrew and Susan as Calvin will leave a huge void in this family. Calvin;s interest in Geneology was also our interest and he kept us updated and informed in photographs and updates of our family history. We shall surely miss his many nature photographs which he featured each year on his Christmas cards. John and Calvin regularly spent many hours on the telephone with long conversations and never hearing his voice anymore will be missed greatly. We are truly saddened by his passing. I have many fond memories of Calvin. He worked with my father Chester Keen at the Department of Highways and they were close friends. Calvin was also close to my brother Emerson Keen. Chester loved to get blueberries from Calvin every fall. After my father cleaned them our floors would be blue for awhile.
I have been enjoying Calvin’s photography on his Christmas cards for years and will miss them.
Our sincere condolences to all the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was saddened to hear of Calvin’s passing and would like to extend my deepest condolences. When I think of the time I spent around the Lake I always picture the big yellow boat and all the great stories of the fun on the water especially the water skiing adventures (he and Greg). In later years I would often run into Calvin at the Mall and we would catch up - Christmas trees and blueberries. Always so pleasant and friendly. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
