Please share a memory of Laurie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Laurie Katherine Meadows, 72, of Stellarton, passed away on Monday, October 23rd, 2023 in the Valley View Villa long term care facility, Stellarton. Born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Ernie and Eliza (Bingay) Blackbird. After graduating high school Laurie attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science in 1972. While she was attending university she played on the women’s varsity basketball team and met her future husband Chris Meadows. Upon graduation, Laurie attended Success Business College in Truro for a year where she earned a diploma in secretarial science. She then worked at Michelin North America Inc, Granton in the medical claims department. Once starting a family, she decided to be a stay at home mother and also provided childcare for some of the neighbourhood children. She had a passion for music and the piano as a child and started playing again once her children started taking lessons. She then proceeded to embark on a 34 year career of teaching piano to children and adults throughout Pictou County. She found great joy in watching her students develop their musical skills and their own love of music. During these years Laurie was an active board member and organizer of the New Glasgow Music Festival. When she stepped down from the committee in 2019, she was recognized for her hard work and countless hours of dedication. When Laurie was not teaching piano she could be found reading mystery novels or working in her flower gardens taking great pride in the variety of plants she would grow. She had a love for animals and was a supporter of the Pictou County SPCA. Laurie is survived by her husband Chris Meadows, of Stellarton; son Devin (Jayme) Meadows and daughter Raegan (Todd Osmond) Meadows, of Middle Sackville; brother Stephen (Carole) Blackbird, of Port Williams and sister Janet Blackbird, of Chester. She is also survived by four grandchildren Henry and Callie Meadows, Drew and Jay Osmond. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H. W. Angus Funeral Home. There will be no Funeral Service as of Laurie’s request. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or to the Pictou County SPCA.
