Obituary of Bessie Muriel Lewis

Bessie “Betty” Muriel Lewis (MacKenzie) passed away peacefully on June 6, 2023, surrounded by family at the age of 93. Betty grew up on a small farm on Frasers Mountain where she developed her hard-working and gentle nature before moving away briefly with the love of her life. They moved back to Frasers Mountain where they built a house and started a family. She chose a profession to help support the growth and development of children. She took her first teaching job in a one-room schoolhouse in Green Hill. Her teaching career finished as a grade primary/one teacher at Frank H Elementary School. Her love and ambition for helping children didn't stop there. She continued to volunteer her time at Frank H for many years to come, helping not only the students but also the teachers with all the tasks they needed to be done. Betty’s hard work ethic followed her wherever she went as she was never without a tool in hand. When building their house, she removed and straightened hundreds of nails from old boards to be reused. She also had quite a\ green thumb, she spent countless hours nurturing her vegetable and flower gardens. When she wasn’t hard at work, she could be found watching the many birds and chipmunks that flocked to their backyard. A devoted mother and grandmother she was predeceased by her parents (Jack and Elsie), husband (John), beloved children (Sandra and Scott), and siblings (Dorothy, Ethel, Jean, and Jimmy). She will be missed by her brother David (Kay), son Johnny, daughter-in-law Darlene, and son-in-law Randy, grandchildren (Elizabeth, Michelle, Jack (Ashley) and Katelyn (Tom), great-grandchildren (Max, Oakly, and Scott), and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2023, from 1-3 pm at Angus Funeral Home in New Glasgow (service to follow at 3 pm). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
