Obituary of Florence Margaret Hughes

Florence Margaret Hughes, a resident of the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou for the past four and a half years, passed away peacefully in Pictou on July 15, 2020. She was a former resident of Mountville Road, Churchville, Pictou County for over 70 years. Born in 1925, she was the daughter of the late Albert Harvey and Annie Clark Harvey Michael. Florence came to Canada from Glasgow, Scotland as a war bride at a very young age of 19 with an infant in her arms arriving on the Ship Athlone Castle at Pier 21 in 1945. Her husband, Stan Hughes with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, was reported missing in action overseas but he was a prisoner of war. After his release, they were reunited in Nova Scotia and remained here, happily married for over 56 years. She was a courageous woman and showed great determination in all her endeavours. She was instrumental in organizing oversea trips for veterans as well as planning war brides and veterans reunions. She was a member of the Legion Choir, Women's Institute and she was always involved with her children's interests. She could prepare a delicious meal in no time that were enjoyed sometimes by huge family gatherings. She is survived by her children:Margaret Anne (Roger) MacLeod, Renfrew ON; Alice Marie (Alvin Cresine), NewGlasgow, NS; Lorraine (Mario) Covelli, Mississauga, ON; Geraldine (Howard) Mason, Morristown, AnnapolisValley,NS Heather Moore, New Glasgow, NS Michael (Debbie) Hughes, Trenton NS; Ronald (Karen)Hughes, Mountville, NS; Robert (Wendy) Hughes, Trenton NS; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Stanley Hughes in 2000, her loving stepfather who was like her dad, Joseph Michael, her loving sister, Alice Paterson, son-in-law John Moore, many brothers and sisters-in-law. A big thank you go out to the staff of the Maritime Oddfellows for their care provided to mom over the years. Donations to the ALS Society of Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or the IWK Hospital. There will be no visitation and a private family service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of the H.W.Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Burial will be at the Abercrombie Cemetery. angusfuneralhomes.com
