Obituary of Karleen Lynn Ann Carrigan
Please share a memory of Karleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Karleen Lynn Ann (Porter) Carrigan, age 73, passed away at the Aberdeen Hospital on May 21, 2020 with her children by her side. Karleen was recovering from open- heart surgery and it was natural to assume that Karleen would recover because she had a phenomenal track record of beating the odds regarding her health.
Karleen was born in New Glasgow on July 26, 1946 to parents Karl and Vona (MacDonald) Porter. With a high level of intelligence and a true gift of gab, she was able to talk her way into grade one after the first day of school. At a young age, Karleen was involved in competitive highland dancing and then moved on to play the bagpipes in the Stellarton Pipe Band. This passion bloomed again later in life when she joined the Fraser Holmes Memorial Pipe Band and, while a member, had the honor to perform numerous times in the Royal International Tattoo.
Karleen was a much respected school teacher. After working at the Bank of Commerce and Canada Post, she realized her true interest was in education. With her usual determination, she attended Nova Scotia Teachers’ College as a full time mature student while looking after a young family at home. She graduated with honors and accomplished the same academic achievement when she received her B.Ed. from STFX University. Karleen spent her entire teaching career at G.R. Saunders School in Stellarton. While teaching, Karleen was a strong and determined voice within the teachers’ union and was chosen to represent her fellow members in a test court case.
Karleen was a member of Beta Sigma Phi where she made many lifelong friendships. She also enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Northumberland Quilt Guild. Alongside her husband, David, Karleen led a full and happy life. The two met as young teenagers, married, and were best friends for over 55 years. The couple was known for the great love they shared and spending as much time as possible with their four grandchildren.
Karleen is survived by daughter Lee Ann Stacey (Jim Powers) and son David (Patsy). Grandchildren Adam (Zach) and Jenna (Jenn) Stacey, Matthew (Samantha) and Sarah Carrigan. Greatgrandchildren Zachery and Isabel Carrigan and Alex Clark. Step-grandchildren Anna Marie, Sarah, Sam and Mary Francis. Her sister Rhonda (Bobby) Hamilton, Stellarton. Nieces Michelle, Janet, and Rachel. A cousin Vona (Howard)Pyne. She was predeceased by her parents and nephew Mark Hamilton. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband, David in 2019. Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Summer Street, Crohn’s Society, or a charity of your choice.
