Obituary of Stanley Kelly Hughes
Stanley (Butch) Kelly Hughes of Riverton, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2019 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born January 31, 1943 in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Mitchell) Hughes.
Butch was a hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman who enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge and skills with his children and friends. He was genuinely interested in everyone he met, their lives and families, and was always willing to assist anyone who needed a helping hand. He enjoyed talking to anyone and everyone who would bend an ear to listen. He was an avid storyteller and loved to entertain others with anecdotes from his life.
He worked at the Abercrombie Pulp & Paper Mill for 30 years until an unexpected workplace accident cut short his career. He was well liked by his co-workers but was mischievous and enjoyed nothing more than playing practical jokes on them. His retirement was spent 4-wheeling as a member of the Pictou Country ATV Club. He also drove across the country numerous times to visit his children and grandchildren in Alberta.
Butch is survived by his loving wife Linda; and their children, Kevin, Barbara, Jackie and Danny, sister-in-law Heather Schellinck (Tony), nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Trevor, Alan, Heather, Ann, John Duncan, Jane and John; grandchildren Alexander, Jared, Megan, Christina, Jordan, Alexis, Jocelyn, Brianna and Roxanne, and great grand children, Charlotte and Solomon. He was predeceased by his parents.
He will be forever remembered by his family and dear friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday June 21, 2019 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A celebration of Butch’s life will be held 2 pm, Saturday, June 22, 2019 at St. John Presbyterian Church, McLennan’s Mountain with Rev Charles McPherson and Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. There will be a reception in the First Presbyterian Church Hall, Stellarton immediately following the service. Donations in Butch’s memory can be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Unit, St John Presbyterian Church McLennan’s Mountain or to the charity of your choice. The family would like to express our gratitude for the compassionate Doctors, nurses, caring personnel and volunteers at the Aberdeen Palliative Care Unit.
