Dear Karl, Karla and Owen,
We were very saddened to hear of Vera's passing. I always enjoyed talking with her at family gatherings and hearing all her news. She was always interested in what others were doing and had a great sense of humor....so easy to talk to. I remember her gourmet cooking and still have recipes I use today that Vera gave me. Whenever you went on a picnic where Vera attended it was never just sandwiches and fruit . I can remember baskets and baskets of food that Vera made for everyone. Things like exotic salads, fruit trays with strawberries cut up like stars, cakes, pies etc. You name it and Vera probably had it in her basket. I think Vera was making charcuterie boards before anyone knew what they were. I didn't get to see Vera much in her later years however I felt connected through my mother (Vera's cousin, Grace) and their weekly conversations where each would have read the newspaper in its entirety and then discuss how things should be managed, amongst other world problems. I'm sure between the two of them, they would have made great advisors on almost anything.
We are thinking of you during this sad time and sending our deepest sympathies.
Best,
Karen and Scott Soucy

Karla writes: Thanks Karen & Scott, I enjoyed reading these reminiscences so much. Mum always thought Grace was the real gourmet, and our recipe box contains many of your mother's and also your grandmother (Marg's) dishes, suitable for when company was coming. Those picnics at Victoria Park, Caribou & York Redout were some great times. I called in at your parents' grave on Tuesday after Mum's service. So nice to think of them catching each other's eye as they stand again on resurrection morning

Dear Karla
I am soo saddened as I read your mom's obituary. Such a beautiful picture of her. Just as I remember her. With such gentleness in her eyes and a pretty smile.
Sadly as we grew older you and I have lost touch. However, childhood memories remain. We were neighbours and childhood friends. I recall having lunch and supper at your house different times. Memories I will treasure are how your mom set the table at meal times. She made it look soo fancy. It felt magical to me. Another time you and I played dress up.in long ankle length dresses. I've looked at them photos over the years with a smile. And that is how I will remember your mom. I was blessed to have you as my friend and please know that my heart shares your sorrow. My prayers are with and for you and your family. Rest peacefully Vera
Respectfully,
Susan Brownrigg.

Thank you so much, Susan. I love these memories you shared. Mum loved you & loved that part of her life when I was young & she could really "mother" me, as well as any other young friends of mine who came to the house. I think I was looking at the same photo of us in the long dresses recently as I was looking through photo albums. There was also one of a birthday party & one of us dressed up in snow suits. I will miss Mum but knowing her impact remains on all who knew her is comforting

Karla writes: Thank you Linda and Jim. We have many beautiful memories to reflect upon, from her goodness to me as a mother during my upbringing, to our travels together during my Scotland years, to our precious conversations right up to her time of death. These things help, as does the great hope we share.

Dear Karla, Owen and Darlene
As much as I was prepared, or thought I was, for Vera’s passing, I mourn her loss immeasurably. I have known VEra since her days as a piper in the Ceilidh Girls Pipe Band. When she was in the Kentville Sanatorium 70 some years ago, I remember our band playing a few tunes for her outside her window.
I enjoyed our many visits and phone calls. She was always positive and upbeat, never bemoaning her many issues, and most grateful for all the kindnesses shown her.
Well, Vera, you asked me to play Going Home on the pipes when the time came and as I am not in NS I will do so when I come home in the summer.
RIP dear friend, until we meet again.
Pat

Karla writes: Thank you Pat. Yes, the reality of her permanent departure from us here is slowly dawning. You were such a good friend to her! Thank you for those regular Thursday visits and phone calls. We considered having a piper at the graveside service but Owen and I agreed that more than just the pipes, it was Pat playing the pipes that would have been meaningful to Mum, so we value the fact you are willing to complete that tribute when you come in the summer. Peace to you.
