Obituary of Garfield Bain Nicholson
Please share a memory of Garfield to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Garfield Bain Nicholson, 79, passed away peacefully October 21, 2024, at the Aberdeen Hospital Intensive Care Unit. He was born on May 7, 1945, in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. He was the son of the late John Bain Nicholson and Kathleen Beryl (Stewart)Nicholson.
Garfield was a long time employee of the Town of Stellarton. Previous to that, Garfield worked many jobs including mining, Trenton Works, and the Golden Penny bottle exchange.
He married Alice Hill on Jan 3, 1975 and they raised two children in Stellarton.
The MacGregor Mine disaster was very influential in his life as his father Bain tragically perished in the mine.
Garfield loved hosting tailgate parties at his Hoyt Avenue address during the summer. When the weather turned cold, tailgate was replaced by crib nights in the barn around the fire . Fishing was another favorite past-time, and he especially loved making the girls put the worms on the hook. He loved being around people and helping people. In his later years, Garfield could frequently be seen visiting his many friends around the Asphalt, often with his beloved dog Rosie riding shotgun.
Garfield is survived by his wife, Alice (Hill) Nicholson; son: Allan (Nicki) Nicholson, Calgary, Alberta; daughter: Angela (Greg) McDonald, Stellarton, Nova Scotia; grandchildren: Danielle, Marcy (Jake), and Carlee (Luke) McDonald, Stellarton; Quinn and Wyatt Nicholson, and Rachel and Haley Anderson, Calgary; brother: Tommy (Denise) Nicholson; sisters: Ceta (Allan) Castillo; Romaine (Dusty) MacKinnon; brother-in-law: Wilfred Pettipas; Sister-in-law: Catherine Nicholson; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother Stephen Nicholson, sister Diane Pettipas, and a brother and sister in infancy.
