I knew Frances when she & I were children playing outdoors & walking back & forth to school several kilometres a day. She & her sisters & I often had fun playing house, dress up & other things little girls liked to do. During her married years when Frances baked her own bread, it was likely done with the skills that she learned from her mother, who would often greet me at her door with the aroma of fresh baked bread & the most delicious cinnamon rolls that I had ever tasted.
My family & I moved from New Glasgow when I was still a child. One week when Frances was visiting me as a teenager my mother asked her to iron a basket full of clean clothes, because “Frances does a lovely job & doesn’t leave wrinkles & creases in clothes” (meaning that I did). Frances did it all for her & without wrinkles or unwanted creases!
We both continued living in different counties for many years & only occasionally saw one another , but eventually I lived nearer Frances again & we renewed our friendship. She & Glen were then married, had built their home, & we had become parents ourselves. When I was going through a bad time once, Frances’ son Dennis give my boys his toy dinky cars, stating that he didn’t play with them anymore. That made two little boys who had just moved to a new town very happy!
After our children grew up, Frances & I enjoyed some local shopping & occasional lunches at Tim’s or the Eastside Restaurant. Frances had much better taste in clothes than me, kept up in the latest fashions, & I’ll always remember her helping me to pick out new clothes in a store in Pictou that she suggested we shop in, when one of my sons had an upcoming marriage that I was going away to attend. Another fun trip we went on one day (when Glen was at work) was to Sherbrooke Village. We stopped & waded in & slapped cold water from a lake all over us to get cooled off before we ate our picnic lunch- it was a very hot day & my car had no air conditioning in it. One day Frances talked me into going to the opening of the new water filtering system that replaced an outdated one at Forbes Lake. When I saw all the old guck being filtered out of the water I drank, I was certainly glad of it.
Those are just a few of the moments we shared. Life circumstances pulled Frances & I in different directions often, but we stayed in touch, sometimes giving each other unasked for advice that neither one of us always followed & maybe should have. We seldom took pictures( except of the tall ships in Pictou one time) but had the memories….I’ll miss seeing Frances & having our talks, with family updates & other news. When she was well we especially liked chatting out in the sunshine, watching the hummingbirds she fed & looking at the lovely flowers she would plant every year. Sometimes we hid from the bugs in her gazebo.
My prayers go with her, & to all of her family & loved ones, whom she told me had been dedicatedly helping her since the loss of her husband just a few months before the world pandemic struck, & while she underwent worsening health.

Frances was faithful to come to our Home League meetings at the Salvation Army. I picked her up for a few years till I was no longer capable with it but enjoyed her chats very much, she also made me a foot mat as a thank you. Her bread baking was wonderful as well. Will miss her presence.
