Obituary of William Ernest Gennoe
Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gennoe, William Ernest of Stellarton, NS passed away peacefully at the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital in Pictou, on November 27th, 2023.
Bill was born at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow on December 6th, 1954, to parents Ernest and Glendora (Strickland) Gennoe.
He is survived by his wife Donna, son Colin, and daughter Kara (Kyle) Duggan. He was a loving grandfather to Kylie, Gabi, and grandson Riley. He is also survived by his sister Diane Gennoe, sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Victor) Stewart, Ottawa, Mary (Harry) Howard, Binbrook, Ontario, Geraldine Berry, Milford, NS, Edward (Joan) Hudry, Stellarton, Bernadette (Terry) Nelson, Beaverbank, NS.
Bill was predeceased by his parents (Ernest and Glendora) and niece (Tracey Anne), as well as his brother-in-law, Keith Berry.
Bill started working at Gennoe’s Bakery in Stellarton at a young age and then became a ‘Michelin Man’ in 1976 (Granton, NS). Bill remained at Michelin Tire for 34 years from which he retired in 2010. Despite the gift of retirement, Bill began to struggle with Alzheimer’s soon after. In the face of this diagnosis, and in losing his driver’s license, Bill remained humble and appreciative on his daily walks downtown to visit newfound friends. He was a ‘man about town’ as they say, and would remark on how grateful he was when townsfolk would pick him up on colder days. Bill also loved animals, often showing his affection to our pets over the years, Pablo, Sam, Shadow, Henry, Rusty, and Sparkles. Bill lived out his final two years in the Veterans Unit at Sutherland Harris Hospital where he remained happy and content, much of which can be attributed to the wonderful treatment from the nurses and care team. Bill’s family is forever grateful for their dedication, often going above and beyond to make Bill a part of their family.
There is wisdom in simplicity, and beauty in being vulnerable. Dad didn’t teach; he quietly, humbly, led by example, we were always watching, admiring. The world needs more of you, Dad. We will always cherish the life you lived, sacrificed, and dedicated to us.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a funeral service for Bill on Saturday, December 9th, 2023 at 11 AM at the Maranatha Bible Church, 490 Abercrombie Rd in New Glasgow - reception to follow at the church.
Donations would be appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, or to the Nova Scotia SPCA, Stellarton, Nova Scotia.
