Paul, Janis, Faye, & the Sobey Family
Please accept our sympathies on the loss of David. He was a wonderful man who I remember as Paul’s Dad,. Skiing at Wentworth, at the camp in Waternish, golfing at Abercrombie, or at one of your stores he was in his element. He will be greatly missed, not only to your family, but also to the larger community, Pictou County, and Nova Scotia.
Hugs to you all!

David Sobey has spent a lifetime setting examples. I first encountered him as my father, Conor Nolan’s golf partner shortly after they both had retired from active business lives. Over the next decade I would join them and Mike Murphy at Abercrombie several times on each summer vacation at “the Shore”. Mike, who was essentially blind, was given the task of driving the golf cart so that David and my father could take turns in the passenger seat “hawking” for lost golf balls along the edges of the fairways at Abercrombie. Position doesn’t seem to dampen the joy of finding a “treasure” in the rough.
I remember David and Faye at Vera Murphy’s 80th party at the Little Harbour Community Hall, joining wholeheartedly in Vera’s happy celebration and ignoring the lady’s matching outfits. Later, I had the pleasure of an anonymous shoulder massage from David a time or two at Fougere’s in Pictou, where he found my wife and I while he was lunching with Faye and my stepmother Shirley’s great Allisonian fried Mary Douglas. I last saw David at the opening of Purdy Crawford’s Creative Arts Center at Mount A. After a decade’s gap, David was happy at the reunion and to swap stories of times gone by and encouraged us in our philanthropy. David was truly an example to anyone who took the time to observe his actions and reflect on his commitment to others.
To his wife Faye and family, who must be truly saddened by his loss, we can only say how fortunate we feel to have known and spent a little hime with the man.

It was with much sadness that I learned of David's passing. I remember so fondly our many meetings over the years, whether at official or social events or our many chats at Sobeys on the westside of New Glasgow. David was a unique, wonderful, kind man who despite his many accomplishments, took great interest and delight in the accomplishments of others. He will be greatly missed as a business leader, philanthropist and tireless advocate for Atlantic Canada and Pictou County, but most of all as a great human being. My heart goes out especially to Faye, and to Janis, Paul, Dianne and your families on your tremendous loss.

I had the pleasure of working under David's Leadership for many years, David had the upmost respect for all Sobeys employees and especially at store level where he was an amazing listener, David would always make the store employees feel so good when he walked away about their conversations as his knowledge of the business was like no other, David believed every person in the company had an important role to play no matter what level you were at in the company, David will be missed dearly in Pictou County where he helped so so many people inside and outside of the company including my own family, Our deepest condolences to the Sobey family.

To Paul, Janis and Families,
My condolences to you both and your families on the death of your father. I met your father in 1987 when I applied for a position in the Sobey IT organisation and came for an interview. Even though the position was only for a middle management position and he was the CEO at the time, it was an indication of the importance he attached to any staff position in the Head Office organisation and the care he took to ensure that I was a "right" fit for Sobeys. The company and the County have lost a great man but we will long remember him.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of a remarkable man who has left an indelible mark on the people of the Maritimes and the entire nation.
David was not just a leader; he was a beacon of inspiration and an embodiment of the values we hold dear in our community. He was revered by many Canadians, not only for his leadership but also for his unwavering commitment to service and giving back to others.
At St. Francis Xavier University, we will remember David as an honorary alumnus and a true Xaverian. He was a man who understood the profound importance of education and its transformative power. His extraordinary contributions through the Sobey Scholarships have supported countless students in the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government in pursuing their dreams, leaving an enduring impact on their lives and the future of our institution.
On behalf of all Xaverians, thank you, David. You will be missed.

As an employee with Sobey's since 2011, I always admired the history of Sobey's family. Thus, I join with so many saddened by the news. While I have never met Mr. David Sobey personally, I am confident I was touched by his influence through many managers and executives I met in my short career. I am always inspired by others who live life to their fullest or even try. And, Mr David Sobey certainly emulated that plus, it appears almost up to his passing. When I read his obituary he reminded of myself: keep trying, never take life too serious, have fun, and help others. To the Sobeys family, may your memories never fade, may your family grow closer and stronger, and may his vision thrive even more.

I worked with Lawtons and Sobeys for over 30 years. During my years in New Glasgow our store always had visits. David and Donald always took time to talk, ask about family and they were always interested in the success of my children and there long term plans. Two of my sons became Doctors and David and Donald cheered there success. Of course they always wanted to know if we could be doing something better to improve our business. When I retired, I received a personal letter from David thanking me for my years of dedication and service. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sobey Family . David was a community man, with community values, he cared about his employees and he made our world a better place.
