A man of many wise words and at times, a man of few words; it was in those moments of silence that his wisdom spoke loudest. Elmer was certainly a special man and I’m grateful to have known him and to have learned from him. His witty humour mixed with his thoughtful examination of ‘life’ was inspiring and left me with more questions than answers - a true teacher.

Elmer was one of the most caring person you could meet. He always asked how you were, how your family was, how’s your job going, etc. He genuinely cared for each and every person he met. He had a tenderness to his voice, always a smile on his face and was an amazing uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews. One could not think of Elmer without mentioning the cottage which he carted us back and forth to. My son Corey also remembers his trips to the cottage with Elmer. This seemed to be a tradition with each generation.
Elmer, u will always be in our hearts.

A great man with a great sense of community...some of my fondest memories are with The MacDonald Family...there always seemed to be a carload of kids mixed in with his as we headed of for some type of adventure. Elmer was alway at the head of the class when it came to the saying that it takes a village to raise a child, everyone always felt welcomed.

Rest in peace Uncle Elmer. Feeling a lot of grief, but also gratitude. There are so many things that I'm grateful to him for, but he was instrumental in me graduating from STFX 20 years ago by convincing this high school drop out that I could do it, and then supporting me throughout. I will miss your dry humour, your philosophical musings, your amazing cottage bonfires and stories, seeing you in your yard when I pull in, and your goodbye waves from your doorstep when I leave your house. Love, Terri ❤️

Patsy and Family, I was saddened to learn of Elmer's untimely passing. A wonderful friend and much-respected colleague who contributed mightily to the public education system in NS and beyond. His presence will be missed, however, his contributions to improve the communities he served so admirably, will live on...godspeed.

I was shocked to read of Elmers passing. I dont know of a finer person. We sat together on the school bus and the usual topic was politics. Elmer was passionate..... my role was to get him stirred up. He worked very hard putting himself through University, while starting a family. He rose through the education hierarchy until he reached the top. Then, he rose above that again !
I had occasion recently to meet Elmer at the Kenzieville pancake festival, and I reminded him of the time when the school bus reached his driveway, and he was determined to win the daily political joust ! Or at least to have the last word ! He hollered " D for Diefenbaker ", and jumped out of the seat, hitting his head on the roof of the Bus. The bus driver, Lawrence Olding, laughed so hard, the bus just sat there !
Rest in peace Elmer ( Sonny). Your contribution to education in Northern Nova Scotia may never be equalled.
Sincere Condolences to his immediate and extended family and to all who knew this most respected gentleman. An inspiration to all.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Elmer's passing. I had the privilege of working as a school administrator under Elmer's inspiring and patient leadership. He served as a role model for me, and I consider myself fortunate to have worked with him for many years. His guiding hand served our school district with professionalism, especially considering the many changes and transitions taking place at the time. Elmer was an inspiring colleague to me and to many others, and he will be greatly missed. I extend heartfelt sympathies to Elmer's entire family.

Patsy and family,,
We are sorry to hear of Elmer’s passing. He gave us our start in teaching here in Pictou County for which we were so grateful. Beyond that he encouraged us with his example to teach in Germany, an experience of a lifetime! (Including some weekend marathon running trips!)
That assignment started a life long passion of international education overseas, in which we are still involved. Ours are two (and our kids!) of many lives influenced by Elmer.
Again, we are so sorry for your loss.
