Please share a memory of Gerald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gerald Newcombe MacLellan-The family of Gerald Newcombe MacLellan is saddened to announce the passing of Gerald at his home August 16, 2023. Gerald was born April 29, 1934, in Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia. He had a 40- year long career as a Survey Technician with Nova Scotia Department of Transportation. A career which saw him work on the construction of roads and bridges in 14 of the 18 counties in the province. Needless to say, he used this as an excuse to never ask for directions. Gerald married the love of his life Dorothy in 1962 and settled in the village of Thorburn. Gerald quickly became a well-known community member by his genuine easy going and kind personality, passion for hard work, and supporting all who he met. He was never too busy to stop and talk or lend a helping hand. Gerald was a faithful member of the Union Presbyterian Church in Thorburn and accepted the position of Clerk of Session on a temporary basis that turned into a 35-year role that he immensely enjoyed. He operated the Thorburn Service Station for Irving oil, volunteered with Thorburn Minor Hockey, Thorburn Cemetery Association, taught Sunday School, maintained cemeteries, and was always willing to support his community, friends, and neighbours. Gerald was a devoted husband to Dorothy and a loving father and grandfather. He attended every school activity, cheered at all sporting events, helped with homework, chauffeured as needed, wiped away tears all while patiently teaching life’s lessons. Gerald lived a life that was rich with the love and respect of family, friends, and community. He took great pleasure in the beauty of nature and loved spending time outdoors walking, fishing, cutting wood, etc. He found comfort and strength in his faith and church. Gerald is survived by his wife Dorothy (MacDonald), children Paul (Tena) and Judith, grandchildren Lyndon (Arlene) and Cailan (Campbell), step-grandchildren Nick Arbuckle (Jennifer) and Nicole Magee (Will), great grandchildren Bentley, Emmerson, and Nathan, nieces and nephews, Raymond (Bernadette), Betty (Brian) Meikle, Faye Acorn, Ron, John (Beth), Anne (Norman), Joey (Shawna), Robert, James, Charles and Rosemary (Derek), Debbie Sangster (Al Harris), Wanda Sampson and Wendy Burns (Robert) and his faithful fur child, Kit. Gerald was the last living member of his family. He was predeceased by his parents Edna (Woods) and John D MacLellan, sisters and brothers, Lester (Irene), Grant (Patsy), Mary Sanders (John), Isabel Adamson (Oliver). Visitation will take place August 21, 2023, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm HW Angus Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held August 22, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Union Presbyterian Church in Thorburn and interment to follow in Thorburn Cemetery.
