I knew Allister for a long time first when he was working at the drug store in New Glasgow and then when I worked at Community Services in New Glasgow, Jean his late wife worked for the Children's Aid Society as an excellent caseworker and we were in the building on Campbells Lane in New Glasgow. He was always very nice when we met. Sheila Chisholm.

What a beautiful obituary—the very essence of a dear friend of mine. Our friendship began in the 70s, when I started work as a physiotherapist at the Aberdeen Hospital. Your recounting of his love of nature brought to mind his arrival at the old farmhouse we were renting in Little Harbour, a bee hive in his car’s trunk that he put by the ancient apple trees. On another occasion, he arrived with a pail and shovel, intent on digging clams at the property’s water edge. At work, for months and months we spent at least half of every lunch hour playing cards, as he tried to up my rudimentary kitchen table skills to those of a competent duplicate bridge player. He had the patience of a saint. I became his regular weekly partner at the duplicate bridge club, but I wasn’t the best student. I’m sure our record for the most tricks down still stands, and for which I take total responsibility. The beautiful bouquet he and Clary gave me the last night I played before moving back to the Valley comes to mind.
In recent years, I visited him at his apartment whenever I was in the area—the last time just before COVID. He never seemed to change with age. We were always able to pick up where we’d left off at our previous meeting, to me the sign of a true friendship. Never a sign of awkwardness or not knowing what to say next.
I think I’m sharing these thoughts and memories of your father with you as much for my own benefit as for yours: they would be meaningless to anyone unless they knew him well, and there’s no such person around with whom to reminisce. He was a wonderful friend and a true gentleman, and I am sad that I will never see him again.
My condolences to the family.

I had the pleasure of working for Alister when I joined the Aberdeen Hospital Pharmacy staff in the '80's - he was a great boss - lots of knowledge & stories to share and we were particularly entertained any time that brother Ralph dropped by for a visit. I was taking adult piano lessons at the time of which Alister was very supportive - even made time to drop into the music festival to hear me play. I always enjoyed running into Alister and catching up over the years - usually at an event where he was playing with the orchestra or string quartet. Such musical talent!

(I was also present at the Dec 24th pharmacy cheer described by Susan Totten - an epic event!)

I first met Allister as a working nurse at the Aberdeen hospital . One incident that I fondly remember was a Dec 24th when word was out that Christmas ‘cheer’ was being offered to any staff who stopped by the pharmacy window.. Allister was serving up a couple of drams of white wine in individual obsolete glass medicine jars ! This practice was a one time event once management got wind of it…..but such fun!
I have sat across from Alister at the bridge table for many years and I will miss him dearly.

Remembering Allister, a lovely man who would stroll over to Clarence Porter's home for lunch or a just a visit. Always kind (and dressed as sharply as Mr. Porter himself!) and always with a smile. A great conversationalist and a true gentleman - he will be missed! Sincerely, Novelle Crosby

Uncle Allister was "far and away" the best uncle a young lad could ever have! I've been fishing with him as a boy, being taught chess, sharing some stories; (listening really); and very much enjoying his talents on the violin.
I had the pleasure of staying with he and Aunt Jean in Truro for a few days and the walks, picnics, and so on were very memorable times.
Uncle Allister was a very clever, witty and a truly calm and collected soul.

Dear Paul, Janice and Wesley, I will miss my nightly visits with Allister, making him all the meals that he kept telling me which were his favorites.
