Sandy and I send our condolences to Mara and family at this difficult time.
Marcis and I came to Canada in 1949, he with his family and other Latvians and I with an Estonian handcraft group from German Displaced Persons camps, both through the sponsorship of David Wilson. Since we both lived in Marshdale and were close in age and very curious about our surrpoundings, we became friends and visited one another often. We started school together in Hopewell after a year of language lessons. I would visit him after classes as he studied by lamplight, because the farm was still without electricity. My family moved to New Glasgow, but we stayed in touch and I would sometimes see him in the open truck with his mother in the cab bringing vegetables to market. We reconnected years later at various Latvian events and we introduced our families to each other. He loved farming and he and the Balodis family have made a significant mark in the agriculture industry of Nova Scotia. I have been proud to call him my friend.

Marcis was a good friend to Dave and me when we lived in Pictou county in the 1970's. He (and Dzintra) shared their knowledge of beekeeping, barn-building, animal husbandry, and gardening with wonderful generosity. We were city kids, but he didn't hold that against us (!). He was always welcoming, always knowledgeable, and never patronizing. We have held him dear in our hearts and memories all these years. He enriched the ten years we spent in the county, immeasurably! I hope the blessings he brought to all of you continue to enrich your lives. Our deepest sympathies to the family.

How can I begin to speak of the beautiful quality of the warm, loving heart of Marcis. I have known Marcis since Buci ( Mara to some) was a teenager and had a big crush on him. I have watched Marcis be a gentle, genuine, loving and supportive husband to Buci over the years. And I have watched Marcis be the best father, that I have had the privilege to observe, to your four precious children. Marcis was THE most accepting, supportive and loving father I have ever known. He was a hearty, laughing, warm Jungle Gym as you kids climbed all over him endlessly which clearly filled him, and you, with pure joy. He often spoke of those days as the best .
I watched him read to you at bedtime and play old folk songs on the cassette ( with no TV in sight) . He was patient beyond patience, not out of sense of obligation, but with absolute delight in prolonging and soaking up each moment with each of you.
I can still see the bottles of homemade yogurt on top of the fridge that Marcis made for you ( not sure you all liked it!) , and in later years with just you, Buci, and Marcis at home, the breakfast of eggs he made every single morning.
I remember, Buci, when you were caring for your own father who had terminal cancer, and for about three years you would drive to Ottawa to care for him, being gone for three weeks at a time, then three weeks home ( if I remember correctly). And how much I admired Marcis for his compassion, understanding and support of you that enabled you to do this . And of his willingness to take on extra care for the kids through that time.
Marcis interior life and exterior life flowed together like few of us ever hope to achieve. He was love and kindness, strength and groundedness, wisdom and humility, all wrapped up in one huge huggable man. I love you Marcis . You will always be an inspiration to me .I will miss you very much.
My deepest love and sympathy for your profound loss dear Buci , Anna, Erik, Emma and all the family. And my belief that dear Peter welcomed Marcis into the spiritual dimension where I can only imagine the ultimate joy of that deeply loving, hugging reunion.

Dear Mara and Family,
My condolences to all of you.
I got to know Marcis through his Nova Scotia friends at the U. of Guelph. My former husband, Charlie Embree, Tom Nunn, and Wendel Palmer, were all close friends with Marcis. After our marriage, Charlie and I visited the farm at Hopewell and were graciously entertained by his parents as well as Marcis.
I believe, after your marriage, Mara, you and Marcis came to visit us in the Annapolis Valley.
Marcis was a gentle person, and humbly brilliant. He was interested in so many issues and I always appreciated the occasional time when he would call Maritime Noon to weigh in on the subject being discussed. I always appreciated him and will miss knowing that he is not bodily present in this world.
May you all be comforted in your grief, knowing you have shared in his life.
Heather McGregor (formerly Embree)

When I was a young boy age 11, my parents had separated and we moved to Marshdale, Marcus being a pillar of the community that he was came by and asked my mother if I could come to his farm which was just down the road and I wanted to go with Marcus whom I was meeting for the first time and ma agreed, after the first visit/ work session I fell in love with hanging out with Marcus on weekends and most of my entire summers, helping Marcus work on all chores farm related and became best friends with his brother Valadis his sisters Rita, Anita, Elisa and Teddy the german Sheppard, which Marcus taught me to speak Latvian to the dog, I have to many wonderful memories to list about me and Marcus, but what I will say with 100% accuracy is Marcus was a pillar of the community, a scholar, a gentle giant, and extremely intelligent and very funny, when you combine all this into one you got my ole friend Mr. Marcus Bslodis, rest in peace my friend and I'll see you in heaven with Gods good grace.. Amen.
