Catherine “Muriel” MacDonald
Catherine “Muriel” MacDonald, 96 of the Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of Sunnybrae, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on June 24, 1926 in Cameron Settlement, Guysborough County, she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Bertha (Kirk) Cameron.
Muriel attended Provincial Normal College in Truro and began teaching in Port Hilford, Guysborough in a one room schoolhouse. She moved back to Pictou County where she met her husband John (Jock) I. MacDonald, and they settled in the village of Sunnybrae to raise their two children.
She was a member of the Sunnybrae United Church and the Bridgeville United Church. She spent time working in the Sunnybrae post office located in the general store. Muriel was a former seamstress at WearWell Garments and was a member of the MacDonald Rebekah Lodge #108 Sunnybrae and a past member of the Sunnybrae Ladies Aid.
Muriel loved to travel with her husband on group trips to Europe, Florida, British Columbia, and Alaska. After Jock’s passing Muriel continued to travel with her sisters. She belonged to the Highland Squares square dancing club. Her hobbies included quilting, knitting, baking, and reading. She made sure to go for walks every day, always had a puzzle on and she loved playing cards and other games with her grandchildren.
Muriel moved to the Willows in New Glasgow for three years and was a resident of Valley View Villa for the past three years.
She is survived by her daughter Jane Mason (George), Abercrombie; Barry MacDonald (Elizabeth), Cole Harbour; grandchildren: Angela (Keir) Campbell, Adam Mason (Heather), Ashley Mason (Luke), Diane MacDonald (Tyler), Emily (Danny) Wilson, four great-grandchildren: Kaleigh, Owen, Chloe, Lily, brother-in-law Robert MacDonald, sister-in-law Judy Cameron, sister-in-law Gretchen MacDonald and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Jock MacDonald, sisters Georgie Cameron, Ruth Cameron, brothers Clarence Cameron, Roy Cameron, sister-in-law Madeline Russell, sister-in-law Jessie Johnson, brother-in-law Earl MacDonald, sister-in-law Leona Cameron and sister-in-law Joan MacDonald.
Her remains will rest in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Visitation will be from 1-3 pm and 6-8 pm Thursday, March 30th. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm at the Bridgeville United Church on Friday, March 31st with Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock presiding. Burial will take place in the Sunnybrae Cemetery.
