John was a special person. My first memories of him are as my high school history teacher at E.P.R.H. He made classes so incredibly interesting that I hated when they were over. A little later in life I had the pleasure of getting to know him as a colleague, gym buddy and friend. You never knew where you were going to run into John but he always had time to stop and chat and was genuinely interested in what was going on in your life. His “two bucket” remedy for sprained ankles has always stayed with me. One of a kind, never to be forgotten! R.I.P.

John was my son craig's basketball coach at East Pictou. Craig was the captain and John being passionate about fair play was livid at one of the referees. The ref. told the captain, Craig, he had to settle John down or he would be kicked out of the game. You can only imagine having to tell your teacher he will be kicked out or else. It was a big joke between John and Craig. They had a great relationship .John will be greatly missed.

AnnShirley and daughters: I was saddened to hear tonite that my long term friend has passed away. I first met John at the car show in New Glasgow in the mid 80’s . ( I had a 1948 Ford Pickup which I recently sold after owning for 40 yrs. It went to Prince George BC ). We became immediate friends and stayed that way until about 10 years ago when I stopped going to car shows. I often seen him at the restaurant when we stopped to eat on our way to or from Halifax. My wife and I live in Dutch Brook, Cape Breton. I am the same age as John was , also a Presbyterian, interested in old vehicles and pleased to say I am still enjoying good health . He was a super guy. Please accept our sincerest condolences on John’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the Family as you deal with your loss. God Bless and May He Rest In Peace. I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Boutilier’s passing. He was my basketball coach at EPRH – he took an group of 16 year olds and we were a family for the year with him as our leader - truly my favorite year of basketball. He frequently drove me home after practice – and he was as kind, wise and generous with encouragement off the court as he was on. The impact that Mr. B had on the lives of his students and his players is immeasurable - a truly wonderful person.
Also, I loved reading his obituary – a beautiful tribute to a life well lived.

Nicole & family,
You most likely don’t remember me, we met many years ago. I can’t quite recall if it was from being coworkers at MacDonald’s, or via our father’s with their friendship & shared interest with antique cars via the Pictou County Antique Car Club. (?)
Either way, I do recall your dad being very kind, and I am very sorry for all of your loss.
When my father was ill, and going through the loss of his legs I remember your father staying in touch with him. With my father being unwell over several years it became difficult over time for people to visit, but they had a shared interest in the antique cars that could carry conversations for many hours, & that it did! That kindness was appreciated.
Again, my sincere sympathies on your loss, and may your memories - of which there are many I am sure - comfort you all in the coming days.
Take care

To Anne Shirley and family: I am shocked to hear of John's passing. He was my vice-principal at Thorburn and my principal at EPRHS. He went way out of his way to get me to East Pictou when he left Thorburn. His plan was for me to replace Anna Cluney when she retired from Grade 12. He knew how much I loved teaching and specifically, English. He would say that Anna would be retiring soon and i would be the new Grade 12 teacher. she retired through the year while I was teaching Grade 10 English. There were times at staff meetings that he would remark proudly about things I was doing in class to my embarrassment. He did many good things for me at EPHS and i had the utmost respect for him. I will miss my friend. the last time I talked to him was at Dave Graham's funeral. He was a great guy! The world is a lesser place without him. RIP, John Boutlier.

My condolences go out to friends and family at the loss of such an amazing person. So many fond memories of Mr. B in my time at A.G Baillie. He had a way of making every student feel like you were his favourite. At a very young age, I had suffered an accident that left me with facial burns and Mr. B helped my family and I in my transition back to school. He made exceptions to school rules by allowing me to wear a hat when my pressure garments covered my whole head and made me look bald. He held information sessions with nurses so other students would better understand my scars. I will never forget being called to his office after getting into a fight at school (which was incredibly out of character) to which he asked what happened. When he found out the other student had been bullying me about my face, he made me feel so supported. As an administrator, he understood that what was fair was not always equal. I also had the pleasure of working with Mr. B in my student teaching practicum. He will continue to inspire the many lives he has touched and will be greatly missed by anyone who knew him.

Mr. Boutilier, was one of the kindest, sincere and trustworthy men Ive had the pleasure of knowing. During my time at East Pictou, he supported me by listening & treating me with understanding & respect. I kept in touch with Mr. B after high school and when I went to UNB for my first-degree, he found me a reliable car and gave me a great deal bc he knew I was working several jobs & paying for it myself. I was so happy to see him on FB a few years ago and we caught up and he told me he “was glad I was doing well, that I was always smart and a worker”…the 17 year old in me was happy I had his approval even after all of these years, in my 40s ;)) His praise was always sincere and I respected him so much. I live in Alberta, so Im grateful I did get a chance to reconnect with him a few years ago through social media. I cried when I read on FB an hour ago that he passed away. He was a special human, adored & loved by so many, he touched so many lives,… My sincere condolences to his family for the loss of such a wonderful man. A life well lived with a beautiful legacy. To the family of John Boutilier or "Mr Boutilier" as I always addressed him to his chagrin:
As a student, I first met Mr B in 1971 as a Guidance Councillor at EPRH. He assisted me in researching information for my future education where I went on to a career lasting 35 years.
I had the good fortune of sitting side by side with him for the last fifteen years at hundreds of Weeks Crushers hockey games where we would watch hockey and talk about weather, politics, local news, world news, school memories, family happenings, NHL, vehicles, cost of living etc. etc. etc. Mr B was a walking encyclopedia and had a wealth of knowledge on almost any topic. At any Crusher game, dozens of people would wave at or speak to him - it seemed like he knew everyone in the building.
I will always cherish the many hours I was able to spend with Mr Boutilier and will greatly miss his comraderie and friendship.
Ann Shirley, Nicole, Denise and families:
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather and my friend "Mr Boutilier".

Dear Burke and family,
Mr. Boutilier taught me at EPRH, just as I taught you at NNEC a few years ago. He was a fine man and teacher. His willingness to help others has been passed on to you. Your strength in caring for him, is a true testament to what a remarkable young man you are, Burke. I know Mr. Boutilier would be so proud of you. His positive influence on you, your family, and countless students will remain with us always. Rebecca Fraser

Q: How did you meet John?
A: Mr. B was principal at EPRH when I attended school there. He was a wonderful and kind man, who put up with a lot of shenanigans with a smile and a laugh. As an educator myself for 25 years now, I appreciate just how much he gave to all of us. Rest In Peace Mr. B - your influence is not forgotten.

Harvey and I spent so many wonderful times with John & Ann Shirley and are privileged to have them as true friends. We enjoyed numerous trips together including the one mentioned in the obituary to Greece. I thought I would share the photo of them in Rhodes, Greece riding a donkey down a mountain side. We had so many laughs and fun together. Our hearts are heavy as we will truly miss this one of a kind gentleman.

Mr. B was the greatest principal. I remember bawling in his office because "take your daughter to work day" was coming and and my dad wasn't free that day. I remember how kind he was to me. He arranged for me to skip school on a different day and I got to have all the fun. I remember feeling so sad when he retired. Rest In Peace Mr. B., you were one in a million!

Ann Shirley and family , my heart aches for you as you process this unspeakably loss . I remember Johnny as a friendly neighbor, always one to wave or yell out a hello . On one particular day Amie and Laura were at our house and Johnny was in the yard , they yelled out " hi Boots " . Mom was aghast and said you shouldn't call him that, especially not at school. So they changed to Mr B .
You will be in my thoughts and prayers . I recently read a quote that went something like this . May your memories bring you comfort until your heart can adjust.
