Obituary of Laura Ellen Fraser

Laura Ellen Fraser age 95, of Churchville passed away on October 24, 2022 in the Valley View Villa, Riverton with family by her side. Born Dec. 5, 1926 in Medicine Hat, Alberta she was a daughter of the late Charles and Hattie (Brown) McCabe. At the age of 6, mom and her 3 sisters relocated to Sunny Brae to be raised by Aunt Martha and Uncle Jim, where she spent all her childhood until marrying the love of her life Douglas Fraser in 1950. Laura was a graduate of the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She went to work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sherbrooke and later came back to nurse at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, retiring as a Nursing Supervisor in 1991. Laura was a member of the Springville Presbyterian Church, Churchville Women’s Institute, Ladies Aid, Pictou Quilt Guild and a proud member of the Aberdeen Hospital Alumni. Laura was a recipient of the Humanitarian Award. She is survived by her children Sharleen (David) Bateman, Janice (Ray) Hodgson, Barbara (John) Weir, Millan (Debra) Fraser, Fred (Patsy) Fraser, Laurel Fraser (Robert Durdan), 13 grandchildren Douglas, Colin, Daniel, David, Heather, Chris, Lori, Craig, Brittany, Jeff, Weldon, Cheyenne, and Dolten; 25 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister Mildred Whidden; sister-in-law Shirley Fraser; brother-in-law Gordon Fraser. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas; sisters Elsie MacCormack and Shirley Blower. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, October 27 in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 28 in Springville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Springville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Laura may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Heart , Stroke Foundation or the Valley View Villa Palliative Care. www.angusfuneralhomes.com
