Obituary of Evelyn McKay

It is with great sadness, yet with a sense of peace, we announce the passing of Mary Evelyn Helen (Rankin) McKay of Thorburn, on March 15, 2022, at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Donald, her parents, Jim and Bessie Rankin of Trenton, and siblings Jean, Buddy, Bobby and Billie. Mom is survived by her children Gordon (Judy) of Lethbridge, Bain (Alice) of Ottawa, and Carol (Greg) Wagar, of Edmonton. Mom was the loving grandmother of Scott, Nancy, Craig, David and Anne, and great grandmother of Baylee, Talina, Tylan, Brendan, Gabriel and Noah. Mom lived for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She graduated from New Glasgow High school before entering the Aberdeen School of Nursing. After her children grew up she returned to school to earn her teaching certificate. She taught at East Pictou Rural High School for over 20 years. She loved teaching and her students, many kept in contact with her some 30 years after she retired. Mom was a very spiritual and faithful member of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn. She was involved in all church activities, including the choir, Young Adults, and especially Sunday school and the Cradle Roll. Mom was a 73-year, member of Dorcas Rebecca Lodge, having received Past Noble Grand and Veterans jewels. She was a life time member of the Atlantic Mission Society. Mom was a kind and very generous soul. She loved the house her children grew up in. Thanks to so many she was able to live there until a few days before her passing. Special thanks to Sheryl Tree, Emerson and Sheila Dempster, John and Darlene Reeves, VON Health Services, the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital and Dr. Gregor MacLean for their care and love. Funeral services are entrusted to Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday ,April 12th at 11 A.M from the Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn with Mr. John Reeves officiating. Burial will be in the Thorburn Cemetery . There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Union Presbyterian Church building fund, P.O. Box 12, Thorburn, NS, B0K 1W0, or charity of your choice.
