Miriam & family:
So sad to hear of Jim's passing. He had such an impact on his community and his presence will be missed.
As a young Constable, I can remember Jim, as an RCMP auxiliary member "parting the seas" coming to assist us at a disturbance call.
I have fond memories of him being part of the Police Choir, and the two trips to Ottawa where "The Champ" kept us all entertained. The standing ovation he received at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Ottawa for his rendition of "Danny Boy" is something I will never forget.
Any show that Jim was in as a performer/singer was immediately better for his presence. He was kind and gracious to all those he met and he truly was a "gentle-man".
So sorry for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Miriam and family. I just found out that "Big Jim" passed away and we are saddened and shaken to hear this. Our prayers, hugs, and deepest sympathies to you and your family.Jim left such a legacy on so many levels, a teacher, coach, community volunteer, musician, and as an athlete. Jim is legendary in Antigonish, both for his athletic achievements and equally for his musical performances! His performances of Old Man River were amazing and 23 years after the show closed, people still speak of this in amazement. Such a kind, gentle soul. Jim, we will miss you, my friend!

Today, October 6, I learned of Jim's passing. Besides being shocked, I am also very sad to know he is no longer with us. I am so sorry to have missed his funeral and wake. I am currently working on a sports history of New Glasgow and there are many pictures of Jim at various ages in several sports and I know he would be happy to see that. There is no doubt that Jim was a legend in our area. He did a lot and he gave a lot and he touched hundreds of people with his teaching, his singing, and his sports. The world was a better place with Jim here but his name will live on in many people's memory. Every single time I met Jim I went away feeling good. He had that way about him. He will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to Miriam, Lisa, Michael and Matthew and all the in-laws and grandchildren. RIP Big Jim.

Miriam and Family. It was a true honour to know and work with Jim. As New Glasgow RCMP Auxiliary Police coordinator in the mid to late 1970s, I enjoyed every shift that I worked with “The Gentle Giant”. He was the consummate professional in every way and took policing as serious as he did his singing and his Scottish heavy sports events. Should anyone look up the definition of gentleman, in any dictionary, Jim’s picture will be there. God bless, be well and stay safe.

So sad to learn of Jim's passing. I was fortunate to have him as a gym teacher at Pictou Academy (1960-61)and as a friend for ever after.
He was always supportive and encouraging in all matters. Over the years we had, not often enough, lovely chats. I warmly remember a great day on the water on Stan's sailboat. Jim loved it so much I thought a new sail boat would be his next purchase.
His size may intimidate but it disappears as soon as he spoke.
To Miriam and family my prayers for your healing. I am now off to Sobey's for the requested jar of peanut butter.

Leve toi!!!!! My first memory of big Jim. He didn’t even have to tell me what it meant….. I figured it out as he picked me up by my ears. Stand up!!! It hard to believe I saw him at the gym just last year. He was on a cane, and still trying to exercise. Even at that age he still loved fitness, was always will to share his knowledge of working out, and never forgot my name. Rest In Peace my friend. Big Jim ❤️ Now, I challenge everyone I know who was touched by this great man to donate a jar of peanut butter to the food bank. Let’s pack the place with it in his honour. I know he will be smiling, because everyone deserves a jar of peanut Butter, and I can’t think of a better way to make it happen.

I never had Mr Sears as a teacher but knew him through my own father as they thought together for many years. I've heard the shared stories of the group of teachers in Trenton from back in the day and they were always pleasent of "Big Jim Sears". I went to school with Matt and his younger sister and although both were older than myself, little interaction, they both seemed to adopt the same kind mind set and were liked by all, as was their father. Having just lost my own father a month ago, a long time teacher with Mr Sears, I feel what you are going through and wish you strength and many memories.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Sears, (I may be 52, but he’s still Mr. Sears to me). I was one of his students from Trenton many years ago, and we were all the better for having him as a teacher. It wasn’t realized at the time, but in later years we knew he not only taught French to us, - I will forever remember Pitou the dog, haha - but how he lived life. He led by example, and I’ve seen many comment he was a gentle giant who could connect with all. That he certainly did, and may it bring comfort to you, along with the shared memories of a very kind man. May he Rest In Peace. Sincerely, Joanne Caldwell.

Met this gentleman very early in my career. He was on his way out the door at the Goodman Dance while escorting two males out the door. I was just opening the door. He was a giant of a man. I was a 6’4” 165 pound guy in my police uniform. He said hello and escorted two males out the door. My thoughts was who was this man, why is he taking these two males out the door. AND what was my next move here. He came back saying I’m Jim and bouncing the dance with you. He shook my hand and squeezing my fingers to the point it almost brought tears to my eyes. Then he slapped me on the back with such a big smile. Jim took care of me while policing these dances along with Bob MacLean. He was a gentleman and a great singer. You will be missed my friend and thank you for being such a great role model for so many. God bless. Our condolences to Jim’s family Joe and Lynne Di Persio
