Sara Elizabeth MacKinnon – New Glasgow NEW GLASGOW – It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sara Elizabeth MacKinnon, 80, on August 31, 2021, in Palliative Care at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. She was born on May 8, 1941, and raised at Bailey’s Brook, NS, daughter of the late Colin F. and Jennie (MacDonald) MacKinnon. She is survived by her sisters, Cecilia Cogan (Bedford), Theresa Byrne (New Glasgow), Eileen MacKinnon (Bailey’s Brook), and her brother Father Colin F. MacKinnon. She was predeceased by her partner, Matt Marshall in 1990, and brothers-in-law Alan Cogan and William Byrne. Sara attended Bailey’s Brook Primary School and East Pictou Rural High School, and always excelled in learning. She chose to be a teacher and graduated from Nova Scotia Teachers College and taught school in Cape Breton, Antigonish and Pictou counties, Halifax, Toronto and Edmonton, specializing in history and mathematics. Later Sara left teaching and graduated from Durham Regional College, Ontario, with an Accounting Diploma. She returned to NS working for the Arisaig Fisheries and later opening her own accounting business in Murray River, PEI. Later she joined the staff of Anchor Motors, New Glasgow, retiring in 2006. Sara made many friends wherever she went, enjoying conversations, especially if controversial, and was always forthright in expressing her opinions. She loved music, sports, cats, and good humor, and was devoted to her church and community. She is finally free from pain which defined so much of her life the past couple of years. Arrangements are entrusted to Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A Mass of Christian Burial for invited guests will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Lismore, at 11:00 AM, Sept. 3rd, Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Interment will be in Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Bailey’s Brook. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Sara to the Aberdeen Palliative Care unit or St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund. Covid restrictions, masks and social distancing apply. No visitation by request.
