Obituary of Myrtle Isabel Holmes

Please share a memory of Myrtle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Myrtle Isabel Holmes, of Valley View Villa and formerly of Greenwood, Pictou County, on December 21, 2020 - just two months shy of her 100th birthday. Myrtle was the daughter of the late Jessie May (Ross) and Carr Meikle. She was a devoted school teacher for 27 years. In the early years, she taught in a one room schoolhouse in MacPherson’s Mills, Pictou County, and travelled each day by horse and buggy. After moving from the farm in Greenvale, Pictou County, Myrtle went on to teach at a variety of elementary schools throughout New Glasgow. She retired from Acadia Street School in 1985 and vividly remembered many of her students up until her last day. She was also a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn. During the summer months, she thoroughly enjoyed relaxing at the cottage in Black Point, always with a romance novel in hand. In later years, in order to keep pace with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren across the country, she adapted to the latest technology by daily texting, FaceTiming, and reading the latest news on Facebook. Myrtle is survived by her two daughters Lois Fraser, Pictou County and Verna Holmes, Halifax. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Joseph (Joey) MacIntosh (Robin), Woodstock, NB; Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu (Marc-André), St. Bruno, QC; Mitchell Fraser (Kristina), Hazel Glen; Miranda (Randi) Fraser (Bobby), Burnaby, BC; and great grandchildren Théo Fraser Beaulieu and Anna Christena Fraser. She is also survived by special friend Chrissie Cameron and cousin Mae MacCulloch. Besides her parents, Myrtle was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Herbert Warren Holmes, brother James Edward Meikle (Marion), sister Mary Laurette (Fred) Bodnar, brother-in-law Alex (Pearl) Holmes, sisters-in-law Jessie Holmes, Etta (Gordon) Rainey, Lena (John) Bryden, Chrissie (George) Murray and Elizabeth (George) Brighton. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Valley View Villa and the nurses on the 5th Floor, Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital. Due to COVID restrictions, a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery fund. Mom, your life was a blessing, Your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words, And missed beyond measure. www.angusfuneralhomes.com
