Pictou Landing First Nation: David Joseph Knockwood, born April 5th, 1937; age 83, of Pictou Landing First Nation died on Thursday, August 13th, 2020 at the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit in New Glasgow; after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Annie Mae Knockwood and Maurice Francis. He was the husband of his lovely late wife, Susan Knockwood.
He is survived by his daughter; Beverley (Wayne) Denny of Pictou Landing First Nation; his son; Gilbert (Jane) Bernard of Membertou First Nation; brother; Alan (Terry); sisters; Lorraine (Gerry), Linda, Shirley, Jackie and Barbara; his beloved grandchildren; Candace (Simon), Tracey, Wayne Jij and Calvin, of Pictou Landing; Shawn and Lin, of Membertou; numerous nieces and nephews.
David was a survivor of Indian Residential School of Shubenacadie. He was a proud co-founder of the Residential School Survivor Group. David was a long-time member of the IBEW and worked all over the North America. He was an avid amateur photographer and was rarely seen without at least one camera in hand. He loved playing the fiddle in his own “special” style. He proudly coordinated the first PLFN Mi’kmaq Summer Games at Pictou Landing First Nation, where he also built the ballfield, which was used for many years. He was never as happy as when he was surrounded by a group storytelling. He truly lived by the words “a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet”.
He was predeceased by stepfather Patrick Sark; brothers; Patrick, John Leroy; sisters; Josephine, Tina, Catherine, and Rachel Anne.
His remains will rest at the home of his daughter, Beverley at 30 Harbourview Crescent, Pictou Landing First Nation for visitation after 4:00 P.M on Thursday, August 20th, 2020.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, August 22nd at 10:00 A.M from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom MacNeil presiding.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.
