Obituary of John Frederick Palmer

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad in the Palliative Care Unit after a lengthy illness. Dad was the eldest son of the late Patrick and Alice (MacPherson) Palmer of Union Center, Westville. Dad spent the majority of his life in Thorburn and was very proud and active member of the community. He was a founding committee member for the Ivor MacDonald Memorial Rink, member of the Thorburn Fire Department for 40 years and served as Fire Chief for 13 years and was on the board of managers for Union Presbyterian Church. Although dad tried his hat at many jobs during his life, he was most proud of owning his own autobody repair business until he retired at the age of 74 due to health conditions. Dad married the love of his life, Barbara (MacDonald) and they enjoyed 59 years together before mom passed in 2017. He was very proud of his family and would often be heard saying “I have the best family.” He would brag about his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to anyone who would listen. Dad is survived by son Randy (Edwina), daughters Sheryl, Debbie (Donnie), Marlene (David), Shelley (Brian), 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sister Evie (Albert), brothers Andy (Jane), Jim (Theresa), Donnie (Edna), sisters-in-law Elizabeth, Sheila (Wade), Marsha (Alan), brother-in-law Graham and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents, our mom, 2 infant children, in-laws Clifford and Christena MacDonald, brother Allister, sisters-in-law Lillian, Gloria, and brother-in-law Fred. The family would like to thank Dr. Soliman, Dr. Kwasnik, Rhonda Langille, Palliative Care nurses and the V.O.N. Donations in our Dad’s memory can be made to the Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn, Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the H.W. Angus Funeral Home and burial will be in Thorburn Cemetery. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a celebration of Dad’s life will take place at a later date. www.angusfuneralhomes.com
