ANDERSON, Alexander Murray

September 28, 1928 – December 4, 2019

Age 91, of Sherbrooke, passed away Wednesday, December 4^th , 2019 at the High Crest Nursing Home in Sherbrooke.  A longtime resident of Sherbrooke, Murray was the son of R.C. (Bob) and Ida. L. (Morris) Anderson. He is survived by his sons; Alexander R. (Sandy) and wife, Anthonia (Toosje), James E., daughter Suzanne R. and brothers R. Wentworth (Marcia) and Alick G. (Barbara). He is also survived by grand children John, Andrew, Emma, Eugene, and Reid and great grand children Ian, Katie and Nicholas, John and Alexander. He was predeceased by his wife, E. Mildred (Kaiser), son Maj. Ian Wentworth, RNZA, brother N. Robert Anderson (Edith) and his second wife Aleah (Palmer Lomas).  Murray had an extended family of step-children Andy and Christy-Ann (deceased) (Malcolm) and step grand children Tony and Sarah (Eric), Adam, Mary (Jamie) and Amelia and their children; Poppy, Theo, Ellie and Owen.

Murray had a long and productive life that he happily shared with his family members and many friends and co-workers.  He loved the woods of Nova Scotia where he began his career as a youth tallying 4 ft. pulp loaded on to ships near the mouth of the St Mary’s River.  He attended Kings Edgehill and the Maritime Ranger School and received his BSc.F from the University of New Brunswick and MSc.F. from New York State University in Syracuse. For a brief while, he was hired as a District Forester for Lands and Forests in Queens County and subsequently in 1961, moved to Port Hawkesbury to work at the new pulp mill, which was opening the following year.  Over his career, he lived in New Glasgow and Antigonish.  He served as Regional Manager for the Mainland and Woodlands Manager for Eastern Mainland and later as Wood Procurement officer until his retirement in 1992.

Murray was a member of the Canadian Institute of Forestry since 1956 and received the CIF-IFC Golden Year Club Award in 2007. He was also a long serving member of the Society of American Foresters, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, Nova Scotia Forest Fiber Producers as well as past Director of St. Mary’s River Association and a legacy member with The Nova Scotia Nature Trust.

Murray loved life, travel, and his woodlots and the camp at Big Gaspereaux, a passion he has passed onto his children. We will miss him greatly.

Family will receive friends at the St. James Presbyterian Church, Sherbrooke Village on Friday, December 6^th , from 6 – 8 pm and Saturday December 7^th , 1 -2 pm with family burial at Riverside Cemetery in Sherbrooke afterward.  Donations in his memory maybe made to the VON, St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke or a charity of your choosing.
