Mary "Isabel" Martin, age 91, passed peacefully on January 19, 2019, with loved ones by her side. Born in Trenton, Nova Scotia on March 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Lyman Martin and Sarah Gertrude (Baird) Martin. Isabel is survived by special niece, Darlene (Roy) MacDonald and children Stacey, Jackie and Jeff; Marlene Martin; John Kay (Margaret) Martin and children, Johnna, Alexka, Marla, Joseph, Monica, and Therese; Owen (Carol) Martin and children, Troy and Darren; Earla (Stan) Mayich and children Stanley and Jeffrey; Cecil (Kenda) Martin and children, John, Christene, Katherine and Sarah; and great niece Kim (Dave) Driscoll. Isabel also leaves behind many great, great nieces and nephews. After graduating from nursing school at Saint John General Hospital, Isabel spent most of her career practicing at Centracare (Provincial Hospital), Saint John West where she worked as unit head nurse, nursing supervisor and, later, as assistant director of nursing. It was here that Isabel was known for her dedication to patient care and quality of life. In her younger years, Isabel enjoyed sailing, travelling and RVing with friends and family. She was very involved in many social groups while living in Saint John and when she moved back home to Nova Scotia in 1999, she became involved in community groups such card parties and quilting. She was member of the Northumberland Quilt Guild in Pictou County and the KV Quilt Guild in Saint John where she was a recipient of many awards. Her social groups are where she built many lasting friendships. Isabel will always be remembered for her dry, tell it like it is, sense of humor, her quick wit and her love of animals especially her beloved cats. Isabel was predeceased by lifetime friends, Albert Belliveau and Betty Ferguson, brothers John Frederick Martin and Joseph Earl Martin, special nephew, Ernie (Theresa) Martin, Mike Martin, great nieces Pamela and Amanda Mayich and infant great, great nephew, Jeffery MacDonald. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019 in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019 in First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
