Obituary of George Freeman Cress

George Freeman Cress - age 60, of Thorburn, Pictou County formerly of New Glasgow, passed away on January 7, 2019 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish with loved ones at his side after a brief illness. Born in New Glasgow he was a son of Mary (Mason) Cress and the late Lloyd Cress.
George was a mechanic by trade spending his career at Hawker Siddeley, MacCulloch’s Truck Service, Nova Scotia Power and most of his career as a bus mechanic for the schoolboard. He enjoyed keeping his friends’ trucks on the road and the fire trucks ready for a call. George was a member of the Thorburn Fire Department for over 25 years, he was a vital member of the department teaching new members skills they needed. He enjoyed building the "Bush Beast" Fire Truck and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trips to the camp with his friends. Quiet in nature George was always available to help out in any way he could.
He is survived by his wife Debbie (MacLean), daughters Jyllian and Sara, son Mason, mother Mary Cress, sister Bonnie (Derick) Coady, brother John, in-laws Jim Grice, Jimmie and Beth MacLean, Bell and Louie Fraser, Sally and Warren Mason and their children, many aunts uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father Lloyd Cress, father and mother-in- law Jim and Aggie MacLean, sister-in-law Jo-Anne Grice.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday, January 11, 2019 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 12, 2019 in Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in the Thorburn Cemetery. Donations in memory of George may be made to Thorburn Fire Department, Summer Street Industries or a charity of your choice
