Brad Smith
Waterside/New Glasgow
The family of John Bradford "Brad" Smith of Waterside is greatly saddened to announce his passing. Brad died in his 80th year on Jan 18, 2018 with his family by his side.
Brad was a lifelong resident of Pictou County. Born in New Glasgow on Jan 9, 1939 he was the only son of the late John "Jack" and the late Marjorie (McNeil) Smith. He is survived by his wife Betty (Campbell) and three of his four children having been predeceased in 1998 by daughter Pamela "Pam" (James) Flanagan, Houston, Texas. Surviving are his daughters Leslie (Michael) Perrin, Cole Harbour; Terri Smith (Bill MacEachern) Pictou and son Craig Smith. Brad "Gramps" was blessed with five wonderful grandchildren who he dearly loved. Indya and Jay Flanagan, Austin, Texas; Karley and Riley Perrin, Cole Harbour; Pamela Graci Young, Pictou. Also survived by his sister Lorrie (Lugs) Rae, Halifax and his nieces and nephews. Predeceased in infancy by sister Kimberly Ann and mother and father in-law Murdoch and Evelyn (Robley) Campbell.
Brad was a hard worker all his life. As a young man he worked briefly with the family owned business Scotian Fiberglass Ltd following which he was employed for a number of years by Allied Chemical Canada Ltd, as commercial salesman in the Atlantic Region. In the decades prior to his retirement he operated, owned and co-owned various businesses within Pictou County which at one time included Century Saw & Marine and Radco Enterprises from where he retired in 2009.
Brad particularly cherished all the great times he had with his friends at "the camp". He was an avid recreational fisherman and in earlier times a hunter. He enjoyed the woods and waters and had great respect for the natural world. He noted with dismay the changes in NS Crown Forest lands over past decades.
Brad had a life long interest in harness racing and owned a number of horses over the years. He was a past member of the United States Trotting Association and Standardbred Canada. He was one of a small group of like minded people who worked to restore and improve the historic Union Track (c1889) in New Glasgow now renamed the Scott Weeks Sports Complex. In 2013 Brad and his free-for-all pacer Heels Lad "Snoopy" were both inducted into the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame along with trainer Ron Mason.
Brad was a lover of all animals with a special one being his flop eared Doberman named "Mr. Bond". He enjoyed country music and televised sports. He was a loyal lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and during games would direct frequent urgent coaching suggestions at the TV.
At the family farm Brad tended his horses, worked on his property and developed a small vegetable garden which he was happy to share with whoever happened by.
The family would like to acknowledge with appreciation the various health care professionals at the VG Hospital and Aberdeen Hospital who guided and assisted Brad during his illness.
In honoring Brad’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. A visitation will be held on Sunday Jan 28, 1-3pm at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home in New Glasgow. Ashes will rest at the Haliburton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations gratefully directed to the Pictou County Branch of the SPCA – PO Box 786, New Glasgow, NS, B2H5G2 (pictou@spcans.ca). On line memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family @www.angusfuneralhomes.com
