Obituary of Verna Elizabeth Reid

Verna E. Reid, in her 90th year, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2017 in the Valley View Villa, Riverton, NS. Born at Sutherland’s River, NS was the second daughter of the late William P. and Bertha (Cameron) Reid.
She attended New Glasgow High school and after receiving her grade 12 Provincial Certificate was in the employ of Zellers LTD for one year. She then decided on a nursing career and entered the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing in 1946, graduating in 1949. After writing the registration exams she became a Registered Nurse and did out -post nursing at Sherbrooke and Sheet Harbour. Following this, she took a postgraduate course at the Nova Scotia Sanitorium, Affiliate School of Nursing, Kentville, Kings County and received a certificate of Instruction and Practice in Tuberculosis Nursing. After working on staff at this institution for a year she went on to Boston, Mass. and worked at the Robert Brick Brigham Hospital. She later furthered her nursing career at the San Jose Hospital, San Jose Ca., while there, illness in the family caused her to return to Nova Scotia. Deciding to remain in Nova Scotia she joined the staff of Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax and finalized her nursing profession in the Colchester Co. Hospital, Truro and the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Ill health forced her into semi-retirement and she returned to the family residence in Sutherland’s River.
She was a member of the Sutherland’s River Presbyterian Church and choir, a helper with the Sarah Jean MacDonald Atlantic Missionary Society.
Following the first International Gathering of the Clans in Nova Scotia she became interested in Scottish Heritage and joined her maternal and paternal clans. She was also involved in the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia which was organized in 1981.
She was a charter member of the St. Andrew’s Society of South West Nova and a member of the St. Andrew’s Society, New Glasgow.
She is survived by her niece Brenda Goobie, and 4 nephews Bob, Brian, Bruce and Brock Reid.
She was predeceased by sisters Hazel Thomson, Margaret Anne in infancy, brothers Sim, Gilbert and Cecil.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in Sutherland’s River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jeff Lackie officiating. Burial will be in the Thorburn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sutherland’s River Presbyterian Church, SPCA or a charity of your choice.
