GEORGE OSCAR "MIKE "HURFORD CDR RCN "Ret’d" It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father and Friend on Sunday July 9th, 2017 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Verdun, Quebec he was the son of late Oscar F. and Marion (Sharples) Hurford. Mike served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 31 years, retiring as a Commander. After leaving the Navy he went to work with Unisys where he completed his working life. Mike and Sandy settled in Glencoe where they lived for 20 years. He was an active member of the Union #30 Oddfellows Lodge, also a member of Branch #34 Royal Canadian Legion and was a former Volunteer Fireman with East River Valley Fire Dept. Mike enjoyed the outdoors; fishing and hunting with his two sons, and was an avid gardener. He attended Springville and St. Paul’s Churches. Mike was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his beloved wife of 51 years the former Sandy MacDonald. Sons: Kirk (Kim) of Abercrombie and Craig of Dartmouth. His fur babies Caber and Buddy Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday July 13th, 2017 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King St., New Glasgow. A private service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Mike may be made to the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital or to Pictou County VON.
