MACDONALD, Marie Evelyn - It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Evelyn MacDonald of Finlay Dan Road, Thorburn, on Saturday June 3, 2017 at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on August 31, 1926, at the Family Farm in River Denys, Cape Breton, Marie was the daughter of the late Hugh Angus MacIntyre and Jessie Ann (MacLennan) MacIntyre and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. During her youth she attended River Denys Presbyterian Church and she was the first child to be baptized in the Church as well as the first bride to be married in it. Marie grew up in a home which was filled with the sound of music and social gatherings. The late Cape Breton Fiddler Red Gordon MacQuarrie stayed with her family and visiting musicians would come for some entertainment. Marie was a graduate of Normal College in Truro. She taught school in various communities including Port Hood Island, Sunny Brae, Broadway and Merigomish. She was very proud that three of her daughters chose the teaching profession. She met her husband Earle when he was playing the violin at a Lodge Function in Thorburn in 1951 and they were married in 1952. Together they raised a family of four sons and four daughters and last year they celebrated their 64th Anniversary. Marie was known for her vibrant personality, her laughter, her love of children, her wit, and her great appreciation of music and education. Marie was actively involved in her Church and her Community. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn; a member of the Esther Mission Circle AMS for over 50 years; the Ladies Guild of Union Presbyterian Church; a 65 year member of Dorcas Rebekah Lodge and a lifetime member of Clan Donald. She is survived by her loving husband, Earle, and children: Anne (Philip) of Braeshore; Robert, of New Glasgow; Kenneth, of Yuzhno-Sakalinsk, Russia; Marilyn (Vickie) of the Ponds; Alan of Calgary; Helen (Byron) MacGregor of Big Island; Brenda (Keith) Campbell-LaPierre of Truro and Hugh ( Janet) of Halifax.
