Donald Denoon Wilkinson
1934-2017
Donald (Don) Denoon Wilkinson of Broadway, Pictou County passed away peacefully on February 3, 2017 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a brief, hard fought illness.
Born in New Glasgow on March 10, 1934, he was a son of the late John and Alice (Meikle) Wilkinson. Upon graduation from New Glasgow High, Don attended the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. After teaching for a number of years in the schools of rural Pictou County, Don joined the Woodroom team at Scott Paper, Abercrombie where he remained until his retirement.
Always a quiet, humble man, Don was happiest when he was outdoors with nature, and spent many days on his tractor, cutting pulp and firewood "up the mountain". He was kindhearted when it came to animals and was known to take in a stray cat or two over the years. For 42 years Don volunteered as treasurer/caretaker of St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Edgerton. He was an avid supporter of the Provincial and Federal Liberal Parties, receiving an award in 2013 for "faithful and unselfish service to the liberal party in NS". He was a member of the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club and proudly showed his 1962 Studebaker Lark at numerous car shows across NS.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Stella (Fraser), Broadway; children, Bertha (Doug) MacLean, Greenwood, Martha (Stephen) Thompson, Quispamsis, NB, Maureen (Ian) Sullivan, Dartmouth, John Wilkinson, Trenton, and Craig (Nicole) Wilkinson, Broadway. He will be dearly missed by grandchildren, Dawn (Jarrett) Tree; Sean and Leah Thompson; Carter, Liam and Carys Sullivan; Noah Wilkinson; Maeryn, Aiden and Nova Wilkinson; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Matilda Tree; brother, Dave (Hermine) Wilkinson their and daughter Louise, Plymouth, NS. Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by a brother in infancy.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 at HW Angus Funeral Home, King Street, New Glasgow, NS.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Marys Catholic Church, Lismore, NS with Father Colin MacKinnon officiating. Burial in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Edgerton. Reception will follow in the Lismore Community Centre.
Family flowers only please.
Donations may be made in Don’s memory to the St. Andrew’s Cemetery Fund, the Aberdeen Hospital ICU, or charity of your choice.
