January 11, 2017. Spicer, Barbara Joyce- The homecoming of Barbara Joyce(Rafter) Spicer formerly of Acadia Street, New Glasgow occurred at the Aberdeen Hospital on January 11, 2017. Barbara was born on July 4, 1933 in Amherst, Nova Scotia to the late Alfred and Florence(Armstrong)Rafter. As a young child, her family moved to Oxford where she became involved with music training in piano, organ and voice. As a teenager she went to various places for Music Festival competitions. She often played piano and organ in church services and other functions. In the summer of 1949 she met Warren Spicer, the love of her life, and they were married on May 3, 1952. Because of Warren’s job in telecommunications, the family lived in various places in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland, until 1966, when they moved to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia for the remainder of their lives. Barbara was an active member of the former Munroe Avenue Baptist Church, now the Maranatha Bible Church. She enjoyed her work as pianist, choir director, president of the Women’s Missionary Group and other church functions. She taught many students piano and voice. Barbara enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, crochetting and gardening. Along with her husband and family, she excelled at welcoming visitors into her home and extending hospitality to others. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Warren Spicer, parents Alfred and Florence Rafter, a brother Carl Rafter, a sister Shirley Rowley ,a granddaughter Corissa Spicer in infancy, and parents -in-law, Leslie and Helen (Miller)Spicer. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Mallory Rowley, Truro; children Robert Spicer(Lois), John Spicer(Roxann), Anne Spicer, Carla Spicer and Catherine MacPherson(Wade), 5 grandchildren Andrew Spicer, Amanda Spicer, Brett Spicer, Tyler MacPherson and Cristin MacPherson. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-8pm Friday at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A memorial service will be held 3pm Saturday from the Maranatha Bible Church, 490 Abercrombie Road, New Glasgow with Pastor Jerry Stearns presiding. A reception will follow at the MacDonald Memorial Ministry Building formerly the Munroe Avenue Baptist Church, Munroe Avenue, New Glasgow. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and volunteers of the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the excellent care given to our mother while she was a patient, and for the support given to the family. www.angusfuneralhomes.com
