Obituary of Roger Fleming
Please share a memory of Roger to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
C. Roger Fleming, 79, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Stellarton he was a son of the late William and Margaret(Campbell)Fleming. Roger was a life-long resident of Stellarton and spent his life serving the community, which he loved dearly. After high school, Roger joined the army as a member of the Canadian Guards and returned to Stellarton after three years’ service. He was an employee of Michelin Tire for many years until his health required him to take early retirement. Roger’s community spirit was exemplified by his time with the Stellarton Fire Service, where he served as a volunteer firefighter for fourteen years as well as a member of the Executive. Throughout his life, Roger was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and a passionate Rotarian. Roger’s "life work," however, was with the Pictou County Food Bank East. Roger worked tirelessly with the food bank for over eighteen years, where he sat as the first Chair of the Board. During his time with the food bank, Roger served many roles, but he was particularly proud of his involvement in the development of the new food bank. Roger received many honours for his volunteer efforts, including the inaugural Cyril Reddy Community Volunteer Award, the YMCA Peace Medal, the Rotary club’s Paul Harris Award, the Nova Scotia Provincial Volunteer Award, and the Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee medal. Most of all, Roger will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, his service to others, and love for his family. Roger is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Winnie (Black); three children: Richard Fleming (Karey), Truro; Lynne Evans (Clyde), Halifax, and Katherine Watton (John), Dartmouth; as well as four grandchildren: Kathleen, Lauren, Richard, and Marcus. He is also survived by his two sisters: Vivian Oliver (Jack), Stellarton, Helen Carrigan (Al), St. Louis, Missouri, and their families.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pmThursday, September 15th at the H.C.MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel in Stellarton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 16th at 11:00 am at the Church of the Holy Name in Westville, Father Peter J. MacDonald presiding. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
Private burial to follow at Our Lady of Lourdes.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roger’s memory may be made to the Pictou County Food Bank East.
