Obituary of Ludvika Amelia Hatfield

Please share a memory of Ludvika to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness and with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our mother Ludvika Amelia "Jennie" Hatfield. Born in 1922 in Huta, Poland she was a daughter of the late Rosalie (Daniew) Hanas and Pawel Hanas. Jennie immigrated to Canada with her family arriving aboard the M.S. Batory at Pier 21 in Halifax on April 10, 1937. The family settled in MacLellan’s Brook. In 1939 Jennie worked as a waitress and then as a housekeeper before working as an overhead crane operator at the Pictou Shipyard during WW II. To help support her family she took in roomers and then boarders and later she operated a Bed and Breakfast under Tourism Nova Scotia in her own home for several years. Jennie loved life and after retirement from her Bed and Breakfast business she enjoyed 10 wonderful years of travelling to Europe including two trip’s to her native land Poland. She especially loved Portugal, Rome-Italy and the Holy Land-Israel. She also traveled to Cuba and parts of Canada. Traveling was her one indulgence in life. Jennie was a hard working mother with great determination, a trait that she demonstrated throughout her life, who provided for her children while depriving herself of worldly possessions. She was devoted to her family and until her death remained the supreme matriarch imparting her wisdom, humor, and firm handed, staunch will. She had a colorful, vibrant personality and held firm to her convictions and principles. Although feisty she was also compassionate and generous and gave more than she ever received. Jennie was known for wearing hats and loved music. She followed world events and enjoyed talking politics with her son-in-law Jack. Jennie was an adherent of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was a former member of the New Glasgow Legion. Jennie loved flowers and took great pride in her property. She spent many hours in her vegetable garden nurturing and sharing its bounty with family and neighbors. Her home was her castle and her wish was to remain in it until she was called to her heavenly home by the Father who whispered to her, "Come my good and faithful servant and I will give you rest." Jennie is survived by daughters Lorraine (Jack) Blakeney, MacPherson’s Mills; Marsha (Colin) Cameron, Dartmouth; sons Mike (Carol) Hatfield, Coalburn; and Barry (Joyce) Hatfield, MacPherson’s Mills; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her step-brother John Hanas of London, Ontario and sister Theresa Naddy of Montague, P.E.I. Jennie was predeceased byher husband Donald Roy, son Steven in infancy, stillborn twin daughter, son Donald Alfred, and sister Anastazia in Toronto. At the age of four Jennie was predeceased by her mother Rosalie Hanas, she was also predeceased by her father Pawel Hanas, and stepmother Victoria Hanas. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Saturday in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, New Glasgow.
