Obituary of Harold F. Greene

Harold Frederick Greene age 89 of East River St Mary’s passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born July 5, 1926 in East River St. Mary’s he was a son of the late William and Mary (Moser) Greene.
Harold was a life long resident of East River St. Mary’s. He was an active member of Bethany United Church, a member of Queens Masonic Lodge No. 34, Sherbrooke, a former member of the IOOF Lodge, East River St. Mary’s, member of the East River St. Mary’s Fire Department and was one of the founding members of the Aspen A.A. Group. Harold started work operating a dozer and working in a sawmill, he then along with his brother-in-law Clayton Hattie started their own sawmill business. In 1967 Harold and his partner Fred Wood started Wood and Greene Trucking (Forest Products) which they operated until 1980. In 1980 he and his son Murray formed H.F. Greene Trucking from which he retired in 1990. After his retirement Harold continued to work in the forest industry for other contractors.
He is survived by his wife Gloria, East River St. Mary’s; son Murray (Cathy), Ashdale; daughters Judy (Barry) Tufts, Waverley; Joy (Frank) Cumminger, Denver; step-daughter Donna (Greg) Archibald, Manitoba; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchilden; sisters Margaret MacDougall, New Glasgow; Marion Hattie, Anna Cameron, and Grace (Robert) Gunn all of East River St. Mary’s; brothers James "Jimmie" (Patsy) Greene, MacPherson’s Mills; Wayne (Gloria) Greene, Lochaber; sister-in-law Edith Greene, East River St. Mary’s; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife Reta, great-granddaughter Makayla Mae Archibald, brother Elmer Greene, sister Joyce (Clarence)Archibald, brothers-in-law Everett MacDougall, Clayton Hattie and Gordon Cameron.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Monday, April 25, 2016 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday April, 26, 2016 in Zion Presbyterian Church, East River St. Mary’s with Rev. Derek Elsworth officiating. A reception will follow in the East River St. Mary’s Fire Hall. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in memory of Harold may be made to Bethany United Church, East River St. Mary’s or a charity of your choice.
