Aspen: Donald Eugene Curtis, 88, of Aspen, Guysborough County, passed away on Sunday March 13, 2016 at Highcrest in Sherbrooke. Born in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, he was a son of the late Leonard and Vivian Curtis. Don lived in Aspen since 1956 and operated Don Curtis Esso for 27 years until his retirement in 1983. He was an active member of his community, serving on many different committees, and was always willing to lend a hand in whatever project was on the go. Don was an active member of the Glenelg Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, Treasurer, and Representative Elder for Pictou Presbytery. He was a founding member of the St. Mary’s Male Choir, and a Charter Member of the St. Mary’s District Lions Club, where he served in the executive for many years, including 32 years as secretary. He received many awards from the Lions, both local and international, as recognition of his dedicated service to Lionism. Surviving are daughters: Linda (Craig Orr) of Coquitlam, B.C., and Cathy (Gerard MacDonald) of Pictou Landing; grandchildren Dan and Karen (Chris Ferguson-Martin). Don was pre-deceased by his wife the former June Cameron; brothers Bert and Ed, and sister Jeane. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, March 18th in the Glenelg Presbyterian Church, Aspen. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 19th at 2:00 p.m. from the Kirk Memorial United Church in Aspen with Debbie Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations in memory of Don may be made to St. Mary’s District Lions Club, Glenelg Presbyterian Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
