Donald Finnis Weir Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Donald Finnis Weir of Stellarton. He was a beloved husband, father, Grampy, brother and friend. Don was the son of the late Walter and Wilda Weir.

He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Georgina May (Ross). Together they raised four children Donald (Shelley) Weir of Seafoam, Jennifer (John) Ross of Loch Broom, Patricia (James) Flemming of Stellarton, and Milly (Wayne) MacDonald of Welland, Ontario. He was a very proud Grampy of eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Surviving are his three siblings Mildred McKarney of New Glasgow, Walter Weir of Charlottetown, and Andrew (Shirley) Weir of Enfield. As well as his loving friend and companion Hazel Chickness, Stellarton.

Don loved his family with all his heart and never a day went by that he didn’t tell someone “I have the best family”. He had a military career in the early years that included a tour of Korea and he was a proud veteran. Following the military, Don and May made Pictou County their home where he was employed first with Trenton Works and then retired from Michelin.

Retiring from Michelin gave he and May the time and desire to develop Cranberry Campground beside a cranberry bog in Lower Barney’s River. Selling the campground in 2004 was when he really retired! The two of them with their trusted van(s) travelled across Canada and the USA on several occasions, going wherever the wind took them! They also enjoyed many cruises. He celebrated his 90 th birthday on a cruise ship surrounded by many family members. Just how he wanted his milestone birthday to be. Don lived a full life and passed on to his children a legacy of persistence, hard work, kindness and “family first”.

We thank Nurse practitioner Kelly Murray for her support and medical guidance. Also the Chickness family for the love and care they provided him over the past few years.

As per his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place and he will share an urn with May. They will be buried on the Weir family plot in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow. Any donations can be made to a charity of your choosing.
