It is with profound sadness that the family of Virginia Cunningham announces her peaceful passing on August 21, 2026, in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Hospital.

Born in Stellarton on May 5, 1926, Virginia was the youngest daughter of the late John William “Jack” and Elizabeth Mae “Mina” (Fitt) Carrigan. A lifelong resident of Stellarton, she was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and was deeply connected to her community and family.

Virginia will be lovingly remembered by her children, Paula (David) Merrigan of Beaverbank, Meredith (Raymond) McGrath of Baddeck, and Tara Pero (Daniel) of Truro; daughter-in-law Linda Cunningham (Ronnie); her nine grandchildren, Amanda, Tyler, Courtney, Justin, Jennifer, Alexandra, Josh, Jordan, and Madison; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Cunningham, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, R. Webster “Webb” Cunningham; her sons, Donald Shelly Cunningham and Ronald Webster Cunningham; and her grandson, Wendell Cunningham.

As the last remaining member of her immediate family, Virginia was also predeceased by her brother, George “Dinny” Carrigan, and her sisters, Beatrice Doucette, Joanna Heighton, Willa Chadwick, Frances Germany, Florence Copeland, and Marguerite Barton.

Virginia was blessed with exceptional caregivers, Tracy Ward, Ann Reddick, and Cathi Fraser, who became cherished members of the family. Their kindness, dedication, and compassion made it possible for Virginia to remain in her beautiful home, where she was happiest, throughout the final years of her life.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Darla, Sam, and Veronica on the fourth floor of Aberdeen Hospital, as well as the Palliative Care team, for their compassionate care and for making Virginia’s final days comfortable. Sincere appreciation is also extended to Dr. Kevin Schnare, Dr. Woodside, and Dr. Lumm for their care and compassion.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at H.W. Angus Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Charles MacPherson officiating.

A reception will follow in the church hall, with burial to take place at Brookside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Virginia’s long life was a testament to the love of family, the comfort of home, and the enduring connections she made throughout her 100 years. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
