Raymond Alexander "Sam" Turnbull Obituary
Raymond (Sam) Turnbull, April 15, 1937- April 26, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family of Raymond (Sam) Turnbull announces his peaceful passing with his large family by his side at the Aberdeen Palliative Care unit at the age of 89.
Born and raised in Stellarton into a large coal mining family , he was the son of the late James and Martha Turnbull.
Sam was very involved in sports for the best part of his life. Playing, coaching, and watching his beloved children and grandchildren.
He enjoyed working 20 plus years for the CNR trucking division and then as a longtime school bus driver for Chignecto-Central Regional School Board. On occasion he also worked at the Oddfellows home in Pictou.
He loved his Jays and Leafs and most recently his new Toronto team the Sceptres. Sam had a great love of country music and played his guitar and sang many a tune at various functions for his family and teammates.
Sam was predeceased by his parents James and Martha; daughter-in-law Margie Turnbull; Brothers Jim, Douglas, Ronald, John, Harold, Dennis, and sister Elsie and parent-in laws Garfield and Frances Stewart.
He is survived by his wife Leona, sisters Mary and Marjorie. Sister in-law Eileen and Sons Ronald (Cheryl Ann) Raymond (Linda), Larry (Angela) and daughter Sherry (Danny). Grandchildren Candace, Jarred, Kayla, Hannah, Blayre, Brent, Luke, Ben, Paige, Kirk and great grand daughter Abby. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to gratefully thank all of the special caregivers who helped with our “pup” during the past number of months. The VON, staffs at 4 North and palliative care of the Aberdeen and the staff of floor 7.2 at the Halifax Infirmary.
Visitation will be held at the HC MacQuarrie Funeral Home (18 Acadia Ave, Stellarton, NS) on Friday, May 1st from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the HW Angus Funeral Home Chapel (256 King Street, New Glasgow, NS) on Saturday, May 2nd at 1pm. Burial will follow the service at Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
