Barbara Jane Swarbrick Obituary

Barbara Jane Swarbrick, age 54, of Lourdes passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2026. Born in Neston, England she was a daughter of Roger Swarbrick, Abercrombie and the late Ann Swarbrick.


Barbara emigrated to Canada withe her family in 1974 and came to live in Montreal. It was in Montreal that she was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome.


In 1975, Barbara and her family moved to Pictou County, initially in Chruchville. After the death of her brother in 1978, they moved to New Glasgow. In 1984 after the death of her mother, she went to live in the Children Training Centre in Truro, and later HCRS in New Glasgow in 1990. In 2016 after a spell at the hospital, Barbara went to live in the Riverview Home Adult Residential Centre in Riverton. She had been a resident with Riverview for the past 10 years, finally living on St. Bernard Street in Lourdes at a group home.


Barbara worked with Summer Street Industries for many years, and retired before her stay in the hospital. She made many friends there. She loved music, singing, animals (especially cats), and enjoyed being around people.


She is survived by her father Roger (Mel) Swarbrick, Abercrombie; sister Elizabeth Swarbrick (John Murray) and their children Breanne and Alyson (Eric), Almonte, ON; step-sister Nancy McQuaid, Ottawa, ON; uncles Peter and Andrew Swarbrick, England.


She was predeceased by her mother Ann Swarbrick and a brother Richard Michael Swarbrick.


A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 11 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Stellarton. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Reception will follow at Summer St. Industries.


Donations in her memory may be made to Riverview Home Volunteer Association or a charity of your choice.
