Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Young Obituary

Elizabeth Anne Young (Fraser)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (“Betty”) Anne Young on March 23rd, 2026, at the age of 80, surrounded by family, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.  Betty was born on February 8, 1946, in the Aberdeen Hospital to John and Pearl (Kay) Hood of Elgin.

Betty graduated from Teachers College in Truro in 1965, following which she embarked on a 33-year teaching career that began in a one-room schoolhouse in Millbrook, to another one-room schoolhouse in Lorne, followed by stops in Hopewell, Stellarton and, finally, Dr. WA MacLeod Elementary School in Riverton in 1975 until her retirement in 1998.  We have heard from so many of Betty’s former students and colleagues of the positive and lasting impact that “Mrs Fraser” had on their lives.  It’s best said by one of Betty’s former colleagues “You have left your mark on this world by inspiring many little ones to be the best that they could be, and perhaps some of us bigger ones, as well.

Betty lost the first love of her life, Fred, suddenly in 2000 at the age of 60.  While this was a devastating loss for Betty and the family just as she was beginning to enjoy her well earned retirement, Betty handled Fred’s loss with grace, dignity and resolve.  A few years later, Betty met Robert and she was so fortunate to find the second love of her life, having 20 wonderful years with Robert, who worshipped the ground she walked on.

Betty was a lifelong congregation member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell and the Rebekkah Lodge Crystal Fountain #11.  In retirement, Betty and Robert were active members of Pictonian Council UCT and the New Horizons Seniors Club where her contributions will be sorely missed.  Betty and Fred and then Robert enjoyed camping for over three decades at Harbour Light Campground, where many days were spent at the Beach and evenings by the campfire, chatting with whoever happened to come along.

Betty and Robert enjoyed many nights playing cards over the past 20 years, sharing many wonderful memories with friends and family with lots of games of Eucher, Pass The Ace, Hand & Foot and the aptly named “Betty’s Game”.  Betty had a lifelong passion for Bowling and Badminton and even took up Yoga in the past few years, hanging out with the “Yoga Chicks” every Monday and Wednesday night where many laughs were shared.

Betty truly knew that it was more blessed to give than to receive.  Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a wonderful soul who would help anyone, always with a smile on her face and with a helping hand.  Over her last 6 weeks spent entirely in the hospital, the kind words and memories shared with Betty and with our family have been overwhelming.  Simply put, every single person ended a visit with “Betty is a wonderful lady”.  What more could anyone ask for.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Young; her sons Allen, Halifax; Kevin and wife Lena, Cole Harbour; Andrew and wife Cathy, Bayview; grandchildren, Hannah, Emily, Marnie and Freddie to whom she was so proud to be called “Grammie”.  Step-sons Troy and Jeff (Cheryl); step-daughter Lisa; Sisters-in-law, Henrietta Hood, Carol MacDonald and Peggy Young; Brother’s-in-law, Edwin Fraser (Faye), Gordon Fraser (Doreen), nephews David, Stephen, Adam, nieces Melissa and Carrie.

Betty was predeceased by her first husband of 34 years, Fred Fraser, with whom she built a loving family and a generation of wonderful memories.  In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by brother James (“Jim”) Hood, niece Barbara and nephew's Tommy and Cory.

We would like to extend our deep appreciation to Dr. Hesham Sait – Gynaecology Oncology, Cassandra King – Nurse Practitioner, the staff of the 3rd and 6th floor Centennial Building, QEII Health Sciences Center; Dr. Schnare and the staff of the 4th floor and Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital.  Your dedication, kindness and compassion in Betty’s final weeks will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Horizons Seniors Club, First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell, the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or a charity of your choice.

The family will receive visitors 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., on Friday, March 27th in Angus H W Funeral Home, New Glasgow.  Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28th, also in Angus H W Funeral Home, New Glasgow with Reverend Bonnie Langille presiding.  A reception will follow the service.  Spring interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery, Hopewell.
