Neil was born on May 16, 1962, in Toronto, Ontario before settling down with his family in New Glasgow at a young age. He was employed at Maritime Steel & Foundries Ltd for over 30 years until its closure.

Neil is survived by his devoted life partner of over 40 years, Marilyn Hopkins and their son Michael (Annie), Moncton. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Zachary and Jasmine, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Thelma (Donnie), Riverton; Dawn (Kevin), Pictou Landing; Darlene (Gary), Westville; Stacey (John), PEI; his eldest nephew Jason (Alicia), Riverton; nieces and nephews, Tracy and Marlo; Steffanie and Shawn; Kenzie; Brooklyn and Amy; Justin; Makenna and Jordan; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews; Kameryn and Ethan; Jackson and Dylan; Christopher; Calvin, Hunter, and Madelyn; Finley. Mother and father in-law, Ruth and Wayne and brother in-law Rob (Linda).

Neil was predeceased by his father, Malcolm (Dyke) and mother, Frances (Tubby), and brothers Billy and Kenny.

Neil’s many beloved animals were a constant source of comfort and companionship over the years. His pup Mila, his loyal shadow, will miss him dearly as will his cat Molly, who adored him just as deeply. He also leaves behind many treasured friends and extended family, especially Gordie and Perry, with whom he spent countless hours enjoying each other’s company.

Neil lived a life rich with simple pleasures and meaningful connections. He loved watching his daily soaps, weekly games of bingo, and he especially cherished playing board games with his grandkids during their visits - particularly when he won, which he never let them forget. One of his greatest joys was the annual trip he and Marilyn took with their close friends to Jamaica; a place filled with fond memories and laughter. They had just returned from their 11th trip to Jamaica days before his passing. There were many memorable trips over the years; countless camping with family and friends, Florida, Nashville, Dominican Republic, twice to Cuba, many to New Hampshire and Newfoundland. There were several cross-country drives including with Michael in 2015 from Alberta with an overpacked car and an unplanned extended stopover in Northern Ontario replacing that car. He will be sadly missed at the family’s annual Christmas gathering. Neil will be remembered for his humor, mischievous smile, and generosity of spirit. His presence will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.

In keeping with Neil’s wishes there will be no viewing or funeral service. A celebration of life will take place in the future. Cremation has taken place. Any desired donations in Neil’s memory can be made to the Nova Scotia or your local SPCA.
