John Patrick Strachan Obituary

John “Johnny” Patrick Strachan

September 6, 1953 – December 8, 2025

With heavy hearts, we share that John “Johnny” Patrick Strachan, 72, of New Glasgow, passed away on December 8, 2025.

Johnny was born on September 6, 1953, to John “Buddy” and Anna Strachan, and grew up in Mulgrave, Guysborough County. After completing his certificate in electrical construction, he moved to New Glasgow in 1973 and spent 38 years working in the maintenance shop at Michelin, where he was appreciated for his skill, dedication, and calm, dependable nature.

In 1974, Johnny married his high school sweetheart, Joanne, and together they built a home filled with love and cherished memories. Over their 51 years of marriage, they raised their children, Shelley and Michael, and shared a life built on love, support, and many happy times together.

Those who knew Johnny will remember him as a patient listener, a teacher, and a natural handyman—always willing to offer help, guidance, or a reassuring smile. He was endlessly optimistic, gentle, and kind, with sweet, smiling eyes that everyone loved.

Johnny loved golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, reading, and beachcombing for sea glass. He found joy in time spent outdoors, in the simple beauty of nature, and especially in moments shared with the people he loved. Family gatherings were among his happiest times, but his time with his grandchildren—Braden, Taylor, Grace, and Kate—was incredibly special. They were the apples of his eye, and he cherished every laugh, hug, and special moment with them.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children, Shelley (Jason) Haynes and Michael (Beverly) Strachan; his grandchildren, Braden, Taylor, Grace, and Kate; and his sisters, Rosaline (Richard), Lillian (Frederick), Mary (Richard), and Rhonda. He also leaves behind close sisters- and brothers-in-law, Judy, Audrey, Laurine, Gerard  & Mary-Jane, David & Laurella, and Mary & Ken,  as well as nieces and nephews who were very dear to him. He was predeceased by his parents, John “Buddy” and Anna Strachan, and his parents-in-law, Frank and Anela “Nellie” O’Neil.

A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Stellarton on Tuesday, December 16, at  2 pm, with a reception to follow at the St. Catherine Steele Center. Interment will take place at a later date. All who knew and loved Johnny are welcome to attend.

In honor of Johnny, the family invites donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Due to the weather - the funeral will be moved to Tuesday December 16 at 2pm.
