Frances Sidney Kennedy (nee Oliver), 94, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully in Halifax on Nov 23, 2025 in the care of her twin daughters. Born in New Glasgow on Aug 9, 1931, she was the only daughter of the late Howard and Margaret (MacBeth) Oliver.
She was a graduate of the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1958 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University in 1981. Frances proudly accepted her 50 year graduate’s pin in 2008 from the Aberdeen Hospital Graduates’ Alumni.
Over the course of her long and rewarding career in nursing, Frances held a variety of roles, including bedside nursing, charge nurse, educator in the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing, hospital Supervisor, and Infection Control /Manager of Housekeeping. Throughout her career, Frances was known not only for her knowledge and professionalism, but her willingness to help and mentor others, both within the hospital and community.
She enjoyed her retirement immensely and discovered many new hobbies together with husband Gerald. Together they travelled across Europe, learned how to pan for gold, studied how to find fossils, completed many computer courses, and much more. Frances and Gerald tag teamed on creating numerous tole painted masterpieces, learned to create stained glass treasures and Tiffany lamps, and even had their own local stained glass business. In her later years, Frances kept in touch with family and friends on her iPad, enjoying the many interactions that technology enabled.
Throughout her life, Frances was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by youngest brother Melvin, New Glasgow; son Gerald Jr, Edmonton, AB, twin daughters Margaret Ann Kennedy, Halifax, and Mary Beth Meerman (Bill), North Alton, NS, granddaughter Emily MacQuarrie (Dylan McLeod) and great grandson, Liam, Eastern Passage, NS. Frances was predeceased by parents Margaret and Howard Oliver, New Glasgow, younger brother and sister-in law Jerrold and Laurie Oliver, Campbellton, NB; sister-in-law, Norma Oliver (nee MacKinnon) and Pearl (Melvin), New Glasgow, husband Gerald M. Kennedy and very recently her eldest son, Charles Duncan, both of New Glasgow.
There is no visitation by Frances’ request. A joint graveside service for Frances and son Charles will be held on November 29th at 11:00 for family and friends, at the Abercrombie Cemetery under the care of H. W. Angus Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew MacDonald officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Frances may be made to the Nova Scotia Health Palliative Care Program or a charity of your choice.
