Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Daniel MacKay
It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Daniel MacKay, aged 81, who departed this life peacefully on October 10th at Ryan Hall in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
Tom grew up on the family farm in Elgin, where he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and humility that would shape his life. In his late teens, he moved away to pursue an Engineering degree at Mount Allison University—a decision that marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Tom went on to become a decorated officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after a distinguished career that took him to posts around the world. His service was marked by dedication, courage, and a deep sense of duty to his country. He led with integrity and earned the respect of all who served alongside him.
An avid golfer and skier, Tom cherished time outdoors and the camaraderie that came with it. During one of his annual ski trips to Italy, Thomas met his adoring wife, Elisabeth—a chance encounter that blossomed into a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Her passing from cancer was a heartbreak from which he never fully recovered; with her loss, he lost a part of himself.
After retirement, Tom embraced a life of quiet reflection and exploration. He spent his summers in Chester, Nova Scotia, and his winters in Silverthorne Colorado, USA finding joy in the rhythm of the seasons and the landscapes he loved. Evenings in Chester were often spent in his “other living room,” more formally known as The Rope Loft, where he enjoyed good company and a cold Alexander Keith’s—his drink of choice.
Tom is survived by his sister Jean MacKay of Valley View Villa in Riverton; his nephew Keith MacKay (Carla) of Westville and their children Ben and Sarah. His niece Stacey Munroe (Josh) of Foxbrook and their children Stephanie, Cameron, Jake, and Krysten. Sister-in-law Barb MacKay (late Arthur) of Foxbrook and special cousin Shirley Cooke of Halifax.
He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Dorothy MacKay of Elgin; his brothers Art, Lloyd, and Lenny; and his beloved wife Elisabeth.
A special thank you is extended to his dear friend Trina Coxworthy for the exceptional kindness and care she provided to Tom, especially over the past year and a half. In his final days at home Trina ensured that he was safe and cared for and always made it home safely after happy hour.
Our appreciation and gratitude are extended to Dave and Sandy Wall, Tom’s close neighbours in Otter Point, Chester. Over the years the Walls opened their door to Tom and shared many meals and conversations at their dining room table. In addition, they checked in on him frequently and ensured his home was safe and secure during his time spent in Colorado. Thank you for being more than a neighbor—your companionship and kindness brought so much joy and comfort to Tom's life.
The family also wishes to express their deep gratitude to Vanessa Koehler of Colorado, USA, for being such an amazing friend to Tom, especially during his final winters in Colorado. Vanessa was always there for him, day or night, and her kindness, generosity and support will never be forgotten.
The family would like to thank all of Thomas’s friends, whom he cherished deeply, for the love and support they extended to him throughout his life. We apologize for any names we may have missed— the list of those who have formed friendships with and supported Tom over the years is endless. Pease know your presence and impact in Tom’s life is deeply appreciated.
Tom will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, warm smile, and the steady companionship he offered to those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 14 Union Street Chester NS on Sunday November 16th from 12 to 3pm. Donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
